Design and Construction

The sensor uses a pediatric-sized hard shell finger clip with a spring hinge that holds the emitter and detector in consistent alignment across a child’s fingertip. The clip applies and removes quickly, making it well suited for spot checks in pediatric clinics, emergency departments, and the field. If a child needs extended continuous monitoring, a soft tip or adhesive sensor may be more comfortable. The sensor is sized for pediatric patients weighing approximately 22 to 110 lbs (10 to 50 kg). The 3.3 ft (1.0 m) cable terminates in a 20-pin Masimo Red connector that mates directly with the device. The sensor is reusable and supplied one per bag.

When to Replace Your 2256 Red DCIP-dc3 SpO2 Sensor

Direct-connect sensors take heavy handling, and wear shows up at the clip hinge, the finger pads, the cable, and the 20-pin connector. Replace the sensor when the clip no longer closes firmly, the finger pads are torn or hardened, the emitter or detector windows are scratched or discolored, the connector is cracked or has bent pins, or the cable shows cuts or kinks. Persistent “sensor off” alarms or readings that drop out when the cable is moved also point to a failing sensor. Keeping a pediatric spare on each truck or crash cart prevents staff from having to improvise with an adult sensor.
