Alaris BD 8110 Syringe Pump Module
The BD Alaris 8110 Syringe Module is the syringe-pump channel of the modular Alaris System, attaching to the Alaris PC Unit (8000/8015) alongside pump, PCA, SpO₂, and EtCO₂ modules. It delivers low-volume and high-accuracy infusions using standard single-use luer-lock syringes from 1 mL to 60 mL, and pairs precision positive-displacement delivery with Guardrails Suite MX dose-error-reduction software. An optional pressure-sensing disc enables fast start, occlusion back-off, numeric in-line pressure display, and configurable pressure alarm limits — a meaningful advantage for critical low-rate infusions such as vasoactive drips and neonatal therapy.

Overview
The BD Alaris 8110 Syringe Module is the syringe-pump channel of the modular Alaris System (originally the Medley Medication Safety System). It does not operate independently — it attaches to an Alaris PC Unit (model 8000 or 8015), which supplies power, the user interface, and the Guardrails drug library. Up to four pump and/or syringe modules can be connected to a single PC Unit, letting a clinician manage multiple simultaneous infusions from one programming surface. The 8110 is intended for facilities delivering fluids, medications, blood, and blood products through IV, intra-arterial, subcutaneous, epidural, or irrigation routes, and is cleared for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. Its positive-displacement drive and ±2% rate accuracy make it well suited to low-volume, high-acuity infusions such as vasoactive drips, sedation, and neonatal medication delivery where small flow errors carry clinical consequence.
Display and User Interface
The 8110 presents a compact channel-level interface: a rate display, a channel message display, and a channel identification field, supported by three status indicators — red for alarm, green for infusing, and yellow for standby. Programming itself is performed through the shared Alaris PC Unit display, which gives every attached module the same look and workflow and reduces cognitive load when a single patient is on multiple channels. Syringes load from the front in full, unobstructed view rather than from the side, which makes syringe seating and plunger engagement easy to verify visually. The plunger drive head is protected by an extended handle, and a single module release latch allows the syringe module to be detached from the PC Unit or repositioned without tools. Configurable display behaviors — including dynamic pressure display and near-end-of-infusion alerting — are set per profile through the hospital-defined data set.
Drug Library and Dose Error Reduction
The 8110 runs under Guardrails Suite MX, the Alaris System’s dose-error-reduction software. Guardrails applies a test of reasonableness before an infusion begins, checking programmed dose, rate, and duration against hospital-defined soft and hard limits organized into care-area profiles. Each profile carries its own drug library, concentration guidelines, and limit set, so the same physical module behaves appropriately whether it is deployed in a NICU, an OR, or a general medical-surgical unit. The syringe module supports drug calculation, bolus dosing (when enabled), multidose, delay options with configurable callback, and selectable KVO on infusion completion. Because Guardrails limits and the underlying data set are uploaded as a hospital best-practice profile rather than hard-coded, biomedical and pharmacy teams can revise the formulary without replacing hardware. The full list of permitted syringe models is tied to the module’s software version, so library and firmware planning should be coordinated when standardizing a fleet.
Software Versions and Platform Evolution
The 8110 Syringe Module was cleared by FDA under K023264 in December 2002 to Alaris Medical Systems as the “Medley Syringe Pump Module System, Model 8110,” under product code FRN and regulation 21 CFR 880.5725. The platform carried Medley, Alaris, Cardinal Health, CareFusion, and BD branding across its life as the manufacturer changed hands, while remaining backward-compatible with the Alaris PC Unit families 8000 and 8015. Software version is operationally significant on this module: the set of permitted syringe manufacturers and sizes is governed by the installed software version, and several FDA corrections (detailed below) are version-specific — for example, a confirmed software anomaly in version 9.15 could cause an infusion to stop unexpectedly during a rate transition, and a broader 2020 software recall addressed multiple defects in version 9.33 and prior as well as version 12.1.0. Biomed teams supporting a mixed Alaris fleet should record the syringe-module software version per serial number and confirm it against the current BD remediation status before redeployment. IPR Medical can confirm the installed software version on a specific unit on request.
Syringe Compatibility and Pressure Sensing
The 8110 is calibrated and labeled for single-use disposable luer-lock syringes, and the permitted list is governed by the syringe module’s software version — a clinically important detail when standardizing a mixed fleet. On the current Guardrails Suite MX platform (Alaris PC Unit Model 8015, software version 9.xx and later), BD documentation lists BD Plastipak in 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, and 60 mL; Monoject in 3, 6, 12, 20, 35, and 60 mL; and Terumo in 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 60 mL. Only BD Plastipak offers a 1 mL syringe on this platform — Monoject and Terumo both start at 3 mL — which matters for the lowest-rate neonatal and pediatric infusions where a 1 mL syringe is clinically preferred. The only supported Monoject 3 mL is the Monoject SoftPack Luer-Lock blister pack, the Terumo 5 mL also serves as a 6 mL and the 10 mL as a 12 mL, and the Terumo 30 mL also serves as a 35 mL. The BD 50 mL syringe (model 309653, formerly the 60 mL) retains identical dimensions even though its markings no longer extend past 50 mL, and clinicians continue to select “BD Plastipak 50/60 mL” on the PC Unit display. Older syringe-module software supported a different list — the legacy Directions for Use also permitted AstraZeneca prefilled Diprivan and IVAC 50 mL syringes that are not in the current matrix — so biomedical engineering should confirm the installed software version before relying on any single compatibility list, and should also note that compatible syringe availability and model numbers vary by country. The system automatically detects syringe size and narrows operating parameters accordingly; the lowest flow rates, down to 0.01 ml/hr, are available only with 1 mL and 3 mL syringes, while larger syringes raise the floor to 0.1 ml/hr. An optional proprietary pressure-sensing disc in the extension set unlocks fast start, occlusion back-off, a numeric in-line pressure display, auto-pressure limit adjustment, and user-selectable occlusion alarm limits from 25 to 1000 mmHg in 1 mmHg steps. Without the disc, occlusion detection is limited to Low, Medium, and High presets and maximum infusion pressure is approximately 800 mmHg, versus 1060 mmHg with the disc; OEM guidance strongly recommends a pressure-disc extension set when using a 10 mL or smaller syringe.
Network and EMR Integration
The 8110 itself is not a networked device; connectivity is provided by the Alaris PC Unit it attaches to. On an 8015 PC Unit equipped with a wireless battery module, the Alaris System supports standard (non-wireless), 802.11b, 802.11b/g, and 802.11a/b/g/n configurations, and the Guardrails data set is distributed and updated through Alaris Systems Manager rather than module-by-module. Infusion event data captured by the syringe module feeds the Guardrails CQI Reporter through the PC Unit, allowing pharmacy and clinical-quality teams to analyze limit overrides and refine the IV formulary over time. Modules communicate with the PC Unit and with each other through two Inter-Unit Interface (IUI) connectors; the integrity of those connectors is central to several FDA corrections, because corroded, contaminated, or bent IUI connectors can interrupt power or communication and stop an infusion with a CHANNEL DISCONNECTED message. Biomedical engineering should inspect IUI connectors during preventive maintenance and follow the OEM cleaning guidance to avoid connector damage.
Service and Maintenance Considerations
The 8110 is supported by the Alaris Syringe Module (8110 Series) / PCA Module (8120 Series) Technical Service Manual and is configured and calibrated using the Alaris Maintenance Software. New-instrument check-in, calibration, and preventive-maintenance routines are performed through that software, and OEM documentation directs facilities to align periodic inspection intervals with their accreditation requirements. Documented error conditions include Plunger Force Fail, Barrel Clamp Fail, Plunger Position, Calibration Fail, Syringe Not Recognized, and Syringe Driver Head Error, each surfaced on the PC Unit with an audible and visual alarm. The module’s circuit boards are static-sensitive, and the OEM restricts board-level repair to authorized service centers. Common field-service items include the latch assembly, feet, syringe sizer/sensor components, and the lower housing/carriage assembly. IPR Medical can diagnose channel errors, syringe-recognition faults, plunger-drive issues, and IUI-connector problems, and can quote module repair, exchange, and parts against the OEM service procedures.
FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins
The Alaris Syringe Module Model 8110 is subject to several FDA-classified Class 2 device corrections issued by CareFusion 303 / BD over the platform’s service life. A 2016 correction addressed a software anomaly in version 9.15 that could cause an infusion to stop unexpectedly when the module transitioned between rates. A broad 2020 software recall covered version 9.33 and prior as well as version 12.1.0, addressing multiple defects including an Error 255 condition that blocked settings edits, delay-option programming that could result in no KVO rate or therapy interruption, software errors affecting low-battery alarming and infusion stopping, and medium-priority KVO / end-of-infusion alarm behavior. Separate corrections addressed Inter-Unit Interface (IUI) connectors — both corrosion/contamination and damage from cleaning agents — that could interrupt communication or power and stop an infusion with a CHANNEL DISCONNECTED alarm, as well as a later correction for bent female IUI connectors affecting operability. Additional corrections covered syringe plunger grippers that could fail to auto-close around the plunger press, and the PC Unit displaying an incorrect syringe type or size, which could lead to delays, under-infusion, or over-infusion. All of these were classified by FDA as Class 2.
Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.
