Overview

The Philips IntelliVue X2 (M3002A) is a uniquely versatile device in the IntelliVue patient monitoring ecosystem — a fully functional standalone transport monitor and a plug-in Multi-Measurement Module at the same time. Developed by Philips Medizin Systeme Boeblingen GmbH and cleared by the FDA under product code MHX as a Class II cardiac monitor, the X2 was designed to solve one of acute care’s longstanding challenges: keeping monitoring continuous when a patient moves. When attached to a bedside IntelliVue monitor, the X2 acts as the primary MMS, acquiring physiological measurements and feeding them to the host. When the patient needs to move — to imaging, the OR, or a different unit — the clinician disconnects the X2 in a single step, and the device continues monitoring autonomously on its internal battery, maintaining alarm capability and trend data without interruption. When the patient arrives at the destination and the X2 docks to a new IntelliVue host, it uploads trends, demographics, and settings seamlessly. This continuity of monitoring data across care settings is the device’s defining clinical value. The X2 is appropriate for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients and is built for use in the ICU, OR, intermediate care, and during intra- and extra-hospital transport.

Display and User Interface

The IntelliVue X2 uses a 3.5-inch color TFT LCD touchscreen with QVGA resolution. Despite its compact size, the display delivers a configurable monitoring screen that allows clinicians to organize waveforms and numeric values according to their clinical priority. The touchscreen is the primary navigation method — touching any waveform or numeric on the screen opens the corresponding setup menu directly, reducing the number of steps needed to adjust parameters or alarm limits during transport. Physical hard keys on the device include dedicated controls for the SmartKeys menu, the Alarms function (to turn alarms on/off or pause them), a Silence key, and the Main Screen key that returns the display to the primary monitoring view from any open menu. The SmartKeys function is configurable per clinical profile, allowing hospitals to assign frequently used actions to a single-touch shortcut. For facilities requiring a larger viewing surface, the optional IntelliVue XDS software supports connection of the X2 to an external display via the local LAN, enabling bedside teams or anesthesiologists to monitor at a comfortable distance. Multiple pre-configured screen layouts are supported, giving clinicians flexibility to switch between views optimized for different care phases — adult, pediatric, transport, or OR setups.

Clinical Measurements and Module Support

The IntelliVue X2 simultaneously monitors ECG with 3-, 5-, 6-, or 10-lead configurations depending on the cable option ordered. Full arrhythmia analysis is built in, with configurable alarms for lethal and non-lethal arrhythmias. ST segment monitoring — intended for adult patients — includes ST Map visualization and ST alarms. QT/QTc interval monitoring is also supported. Respiration rate is measured via the impedance method using the ECG cable. SpO2 is available in multiple technology options: Philips FAST SpO2, Nellcor OxiMax, Masimo SET, or Masimo rainbow SET, depending on how the device is configured at time of manufacture. Non-invasive blood pressure is measured using the oscillometric method and supports manual, automatic, and sequence operating modes. Optional invasive pressure and temperature measurements are available via the right-side connector panel. CO2 measurement is supported through MMS extension modules — the M3014A for sidestream, M3015A for Microstream, and M3016A for mainstream capnography — though MMS extensions require the X2 to be powered by an external source (host monitor or M8023A external power supply) rather than battery alone. This modular architecture allows the X2 to be configured for hemodynamic monitoring beyond basic vital signs when the clinical situation demands it. The X2 also supports diagnostic 12-lead ECG capture, which can be transmitted to and stored in a connected ECG management system when linked to the IntelliVue Information Center iX.

Portability and Power

The IntelliVue X2 weighs between 1.98 and 2.64 lbs depending on the option configuration, making it one of the lightest advanced transport monitors in the IntelliVue family. The M4607A rechargeable battery is housed in the body of the device and must remain installed during use. Under typical monitoring conditions — ECG/Resp and SpO2 in use, NBP cycling every 15 minutes, automatic brightness reduction enabled, and basic alarming active — a fully charged battery provides approximately three hours of standalone monitoring. For longer transports or cases requiring concurrent CO2 measurement with additional invasive pressure and temperature monitoring, the Battery Extension accessory increases runtime to approximately six hours. The X2 draws power from a connected host IntelliVue monitor via the MSL cable, which also charges the internal battery during MMS operation — including when the host is itself running on battery power. For standalone operation when a host is unavailable, the optional M8023A external power supply accepts input from 100 to 240V AC (±10%) at 50/60 Hz (±5%), making it suitable for international use and transport applications requiring AC-powered operation. The device supports mounting on a bed rail, rollstand, wall, or the left side of a Flexible Module Rack, giving biomedical teams multiple installation options across different care settings.

Trending, Event Surveillance, and Clinical Decision Support

The IntelliVue X2 stores patient data in trend databases that support clinical review both at the bedside and at a central station. Tabular trends (vital signs tables) are available for review on the device itself and can be documented on a central printer when connected to the IntelliVue network. The device stores up to 48 hours of numeric trend data at five-minute resolution and up to 24 hours at one-minute resolution, providing clinicians with a meaningful longitudinal picture of patient status. Graphical horizon trends are also available on-screen, a display format that emphasizes deviations from baseline to make subtle physiological changes more visually apparent. Each NBP measurement — whether manually triggered or part of an automatic sequence — automatically generates an entry in the vital signs trend table, ensuring a complete and time-stamped hemodynamic record. The ST Map feature provides a graphical representation of ST segment data across the monitored leads, enabling rapid visual assessment of perfusion changes. Alarm reports can be configured to capture automatically when selected alarms trigger, supporting post-event clinical review. The IntelliVue PC Printing Solution, available as a free download from Philips, enables printed patient reports directly from the device’s data, supporting documentation workflows without requiring proprietary printing hardware.

Network and EMR Integration

The IntelliVue X2 includes a wired Ethernet LAN interface implementing IEEE 802.3, a built-in WLAN interface for wireless network operation using 802.11, and a Short Range Radio (SRR) interface supporting IntelliVue Instrument Telemetry (IIT). All network communication passes through the Measurement Link (MSL) connector on the left side of the device, which also serves as the power connection when the X2 is used with the M8023A external power supply or a host monitor. When paired with a host IntelliVue monitor via SRR or direct connection, the X2 functions as a secondary data stream that appears combined with the host’s data in a single sector at the IntelliVue Information Center, giving central station staff a unified view of the patient record. Through the network, the X2 can synchronize patient demographics, upload trend data to new host monitors, and transmit diagnostic 12-lead ECGs to compatible ECG management systems when supported by the IntelliVue Information Center iX software version. The IntelliVue XDS software option allows independent display of the X2 screen on an external monitor over the same LAN, supporting OR and induction workflows where the primary monitor is positioned for the surgical team but the anesthesiologist requires a separate view. The MIB/RS232 data export interface is not available on the X2 itself, but the device fully participates in the IntelliVue network data infrastructure when connected to a compatible host.

FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins

The Philips IntelliVue X2 (M3002A) is among the devices included in a Class 2 FDA device correction — and a parallel Type II recall issued by Health Canada — involving the infinite alarms-off feature present across multiple Philips IntelliVue patient monitors. The IntelliVue monitoring platform includes a clinical feature that allows all alarms to be paused for a configured period or switched off indefinitely until a user manually re-enables them. This functionality has recognized clinical utility, particularly in the operating room, catheterization laboratory, and during resuscitations, where continuous audible alarming can create unnecessary distraction during closely supervised procedures. However, Philips received complaints indicating that in some instances patients were monitored while alarms remained silenced for an indefinite period and clinical staff were unaware the alarms were in an off state. In several reported cases this led to delayed patient treatment, and in some cases severe patient harm or death was reported in association with the alarm-off condition. The correction addresses user interface communication of the alarms-off state along with associated labeling and training guidance intended to reduce the risk that the infinite alarms-off state goes unrecognized by clinical staff. The FDA classified this as a Class 2 device correction, meaning the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote but the potential for harm exists.

Recommended actions: Facilities using the IntelliVue X2 should verify that clinical staff are trained on the alarm-pause and alarms-off functionality, including how to recognize when alarms are in an indefinitely silenced state. Review current alarm management policies to ensure the infinite alarms-off feature is used only in appropriate clinical contexts and that a clear re-enable workflow is in place before leaving a monitored patient unattended. Contact Philips service for the most current software guidance and to confirm whether any software update applies to specific device configurations in your facility.

Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.
