Overview

The Philips IntelliVue MX750 is the critical care workhorse of the IntelliVue platform, purpose-built for the monitoring demands of intensive care units, operating rooms, cardiac care units, and neonatal environments. As a bedside patient monitor, the MX750 centers on a 19-inch Full HD projected capacitive touchscreen and supports monitoring of adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients through a modular, plug-and-play architecture. It is part of Philips’ broader IntelliVue product family, which includes the larger MX850 and a wide array of compatible Multi-Measurement Modules, plug-in modules, and gas analyzers. The MX750’s design reflects a dual focus: delivering comprehensive, real-time physiological data to clinicians at the bedside while integrating deeply into hospital IT infrastructure through encrypted networking, EMR connectivity, and direct access to applications via HTML5 and Citrix. The monitor received FDA 510(k) clearance under K210906 in October 2021, clearing it for marketing in the United States as a multiparameter patient monitor (Product Code MHX, Class II, 21 CFR 870.1025).

Display and User Interface

The MX750’s 19-inch Full HD LCD (TFT) display delivers 1920 × 1080 resolution with a wide viewing angle, providing clear waveform and numeric presentation across a broad range of lighting environments. The display uses projected capacitive (pCAP) touch technology that supports multi-finger touch and swipe gestures, giving clinicians a familiar, smartphone-like interaction model for navigating monitoring screens. The monitor can be configured to automatically adjust screen brightness based on ambient light conditions, with the adaptation range fully configurable by the facility.

Screen layouts are adjustable to allow flexible display of measurement information, with waves capable of being overlapped or dynamically resized depending on the number of active waveforms. The monitor supports up to 12 simultaneous waveform channels. For 12-lead ECG monitoring, the MX750 can display 12 real-time ECG waves with a rhythm strip and all ST values simultaneously. Configurable SmartKeys with color-coded, customizable waveform and numeric displays give users fast access to common monitoring tasks without navigating deep menu trees. The Previous/Next Screen function provides quick access to the 10 most recently used screens, including the last three modified screens.

Input device options include the touchscreen, USB mouse or trackball, USB keyboard, barcode scanner, and an on-screen simulated keyboard for alphanumeric data entry. These input devices can be used individually or in combination. User authentication is handled via a built-in RFID/NFC card reader, enabling contactless login and role-based permissions at the bedside.

Clinical Measurements and Module Support

The MX750’s measurement capability is defined by the Philips IntelliVue Multi-Measurement Module ecosystem. The monitor itself provides the display, processing, and connectivity platform; physiological measurements are delivered by connected MMS units and plug-in modules via one or two FMX-4 Module Racks, supporting up to eight plug-in modules simultaneously. Core parameters accessible through the MMS family include ECG with arrhythmia detection and ST segment monitoring, respiration, SpO2, noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP), invasive pressures (up to four channels), temperature, CO2 via Microstream or sidestream configurations, and a broad range of extended parameters including cardiac output, ScvO2, EEG, BIS, NMT, and gas analysis through compatible IntelliVue gas analyzers.

SpO2 measurement is available through a choice of Philips FAST SpO2, Masimo SET SpO2, Nellcor OxiMax SpO2, or Masimo rainbow SET SpO2 technology, with the rainbow SET platform additionally supporting SpCO, SpMet, SpHb, and respiratory rate from the SpO2 signal. The MX750 supports up to two simultaneous SpO2 channels. ST segment monitoring is validated for adult patients only and is not clinically validated for neonatal or pediatric patients. The monitor’s modular architecture is designed for long-term investment protection, allowing new capabilities to be added over time as monitoring requirements evolve.

Portability and Power

The MX750 is a bedside-class patient monitor intended for use in fixed clinical environments, including ICU beds, OR suites, cardiac care units, and neonatal care areas. While the monitor itself is not a portable transport device, the IntelliVue platform supports transport continuity through the use of compatible Multi-Measurement Modules such as the X2 and X3. The X3, for example, can operate as a standalone patient monitor on battery power for over five hours with a basic monitoring configuration, allowing the same MMS used at the bedside to transition with the patient during in-hospital transport without requiring a separate transport monitor. When the X3 is reconnected to the host MX750, it resumes its module role and uploads stored trend data, patient demographics, and measurement settings seamlessly. The MX750’s passively cooled design, with no internal fan, reduces cross-contamination risk and supports infection control protocols. The monitor housing and finish materials are tested for compatibility with hospital-grade disinfectants.

Trending, Event Surveillance, and Clinical Decision Support

The MX750 provides tabular and graphic trend review with high-resolution trending at beat-to-beat resolution, enabling clinicians to track subtle parameter changes over time. Advanced Event Surveillance allows the creation of rule-based alerts that trigger when configurable multi-parameter event conditions are met, providing higher-priority notification when combinations of vital sign changes occur simultaneously. Neonatal Event Review (NER) provides automatic detection of patient status deterioration in neonatal patients. The IntelliVue Early Warning Scoring (EWS) application calculates a score based on vital signs to support early identification of patient deterioration, while Electronic Strip Recording allows electronic strips to be reviewed on-screen and printed as reports.

Clinical decision support tools built into the MX750 include a drug calculator with configurable drug lists, a titration table, and a drip table. Ventilation, hemodynamic, and oxygenation calculations are available, along with the ProtocolWatch clinical decision support tool, which incorporates the SSC Sepsis Protocol for adult patients. The Integrated Pulmonary Index (IPI), intended for adult and pediatric patients aged 1 to 12 years, provides an adjunct composite index for respiratory monitoring. The Visual Patient Avatar translates parameter data into an animated, color-coded visual representation of patient status to support situational awareness in busy clinical environments. The Alarm Advisor application provides proactive feedback on recurring alarm limit violations, helping clinicians adapt alarm thresholds to individual patients and reduce non-actionable alarm burden in accordance with hospital-defined guidance.

Network and EMR Integration

The MX750 is designed for deep integration into hospital IT environments. Standard connectivity includes a 100BaseT LAN port, RS232 port, four USB ports, basic nurse call relay, and analog ECG sync output. An optional 802.11 wireless interface (Option J35) supports deployment in wireless infrastructure environments, and an optional MIB/RS232 two-port interface (Option J13) enables numeric, wave, and alarm data export to anesthesia recordkeepers, automated systems, and personal computers. The monitor is interoperable with the Philips Patient Information Center iX (PIC iX) central monitoring system and with IntelliVue XDS software for remote viewing and control of the monitor from a networked workstation.

At the bedside, the MX750’s built-in HTML5 web application platform and native Citrix Xen receiver provide direct access to hospital applications, the EMR, critical care information systems such as Philips IntelliSpace Critical Care and Anesthesia (ICCA), and PACS — without requiring the optional integrated PC (iPC). The optional iPC adds a fan-less, medical-grade Windows-based PC within the monitor housing, providing access to Windows applications and a dedicated isolated LAN interface for hospital network access independent of the monitoring network. The iPC includes six USB ports and supports both touch and non-touch displays. Data flows between the MX750 and Philips Acute Care Telehealth solutions are supported via end-to-end encryption consistent with the monitor’s enterprise cybersecurity architecture.

FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins

The FDA has identified at least one Class 2 device correction associated with the Philips IntelliVue MX750 (FDA recall record ID 217182). This correction addresses a concern with the monitor’s alarm management functionality — specifically, the feature that allows alarms to be switched off for an indefinite period. The IntelliVue monitors include both an alarm pause function, which silences alarms for a configured finite timeframe, and an alarm-off function that disables alarms for an infinite period until manually re-enabled by the user. The infinite alarm-off feature serves a legitimate clinical purpose in settings such as operating rooms, catheterization laboratories, and during resuscitation procedures, where audible alarms during closely monitored interventions may be distracting and clinically inappropriate.

Philips received complaints that IntelliVue monitors did not alarm when expected. In some instances, complaints cited delayed patient treatment attributable to alarms being unexpectedly silent. In some cases, reports of severe patient harm or death were filed. Investigation determined that in these events the alarms had been placed in the infinite-off state, and the monitoring staff may not have been aware of the alarm status. This event pattern prompted regulatory action consistent with a Class 2 classification, indicating that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or that the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

Recommended actions: Facilities using the Philips IntelliVue MX750 should verify their current alarm management policies and confirm that staff are trained to recognize and respond to the alarm-off indicator on the monitor display. Review Philips’ field communications related to this correction for specific software version applicability and any remediation instructions. Confirm with Philips or your biomedical engineering department whether the correction has been applied to your specific units. Contact Philips directly at the number on your service documentation if you have not received a correction notice.

Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.
