Baxter Sigma Spectrum Version 6
The Baxter SIGMA Spectrum Version 6 is one of the most recognizable large-volume infusion pumps in North American acute care — and for good reason. The Spectrum platform built its reputation on one thing: keeping clinicians from making programming errors under pressure. Dose Error Reduction Software (DERS) defaults on at startup, your Master Drug Library enforces soft and hard limits by care area, and the guided bedside workflow means staff spend less time second-guessing and more time focused on the patient.
Flow rates run 0.5 to 999 ml/h with ±5% accuracy, the pump supports a full range of clinical modes including titration on the fly and multi-step ramping, and optional 802.11b/g wireless lets your biomed team push drug library updates and pull CQI data across the fleet remotely. If you’re running Spectrum pumps already, the V6 slots right into your existing infrastructure — same IV sets, same staff training, same wireless backbone. If you’re building a fleet from scratch, it’s a proven platform at a price point that’s hard to argue with.
Also available:
- Baxter Sigma Spectrum Version 8 — enhanced drug library and wireless updates, same proven Spectrum platform

Overview
The Baxter SIGMA Spectrum Infusion Pump Version 6 (P/N 35700BAX) is a large-volume volumetric infusion pump designed for precision fluid delivery in acute care, outpatient, and home infusion environments. Originally developed by SIGMA International and subsequently acquired by Baxter Healthcare Corporation, the Spectrum platform became one of the most widely deployed infusion pump families in North American hospitals. Version 6 represents a mature, proven release of the platform — running Master Drug Library Version 6 on pump software versions 6.02 and 6.05 — delivering the configurable safety software and guided programming workflow that made the Spectrum family the clinical standard across ICUs, oncology units, and general med/surg floors. Facilities with existing Spectrum infrastructure will find the V6 straightforward to integrate, and clinical staff familiar with any Spectrum version will recognize the workflow immediately.
Flow Rate Performance and Infusion Accuracy
The Spectrum V6 delivers flow rates from 0.5 to 999 ml/h using a linear peristaltic pumping mechanism. Rate increments are 0.1 ml/h through 99.9 ml/h and 1 ml/h above that, providing clinicians with fine-grained control at low rates where precision matters most. Flow rate accuracy is ±5% from 2 to 999 ml/h with Baxter IV sets, and ±5% from 2 to 800 ml/h with Hospira sets (±10% above 800 ml/h with Hospira). At very low rates of 0.5 to 1.9 ml/h, accuracy is expressed as ±0.1 ml/h rather than a percentage. Total VTBI capacity is 12 liters with Baxter sets and 9 liters with Hospira sets. At infusion complete, the pump transitions automatically to a KVO rate — the lesser of 1 ml/h or the active infusion rate — to maintain IV access without over-delivering volume. A dual negative-temperature-coefficient thermistor system compensates pump motor speed for temperature variation, maintaining flow rate accuracy across the full 60 – 80°F operating range.
Dose Error Reduction and Drug Library
The centerpiece of the Spectrum V6 platform is its configurable Dose Error Reduction Software (DERS), which guides clinicians through drug selection and dose programming using a facility-customized Master Drug Library. MDL Version 6 supports configurable Care Areas — each with its own approved drug list, concentrations, dose units, and soft and hard limits — allowing institutions to align the library to ICU, oncology, pediatric, or general floor workflows. Soft limits prompt a clinician to confirm before proceeding; hard limits prevent programming outside defined safe boundaries. DERS defaults to active at system startup, reducing the risk of operators bypassing safety checks. A quick drug-find search function accelerates drug selection at the bedside by allowing entry of the first two letters of a drug name, and on-board digital help screens are accessible at any programming step. Drug library updates can be pushed wirelessly via SIGMA Gateway when the optional 802.11b/g wireless battery module is installed, or transferred via RS-232 or IrDA when wireless infrastructure is not available.
Infusion Delivery Modes
The Spectrum V6 supports a broad range of infusion programming modes to accommodate diverse clinical scenarios. Standard continuous infusion operates through DERS or BASIC mode. Secondary infusion allows a piggyback medication to be delivered and then automatically transitions back to the primary infusion via secondary callback, reducing manual intervention. Loading Dose mode delivers a rapid initial dose before transitioning to a maintenance rate. Bolus programming allows a specified volume to be delivered at a defined rate on demand. Multi-Step mode enables automated ramped or sequenced delivery across up to 10 individual programming steps in a single session, useful for complex drug protocols and TPN. Delayed Run supports scheduled start times, and Amount/Time mode simplifies programming when a clinician knows the desired volume over a defined time period rather than a specific ml/h rate. A Titration function allows the running flow rate to be adjusted without stopping the pump, which is particularly valuable for vasoactive and hemodynamic agents.
Safety Alarms and Detection Systems
The Spectrum V6 incorporates multiple independent safety sensing systems that are automatically self-checked during setup and during active infusion. Air-in-line detection uses a dual-beam ultrasonic sensor that triggers an alarm for single bubbles exceeding 140 mcL (Baxter sets) or 125 mcL (Hospira sets), and accumulates smaller bubbles — alarming if more than 1 mL of air passes through in any 15-minute window. Downstream occlusion detection is user-selectable at three pressure thresholds: Low (6 ±4 PSI), Medium (13 ±6 PSI), and High (19 ±9 PSI); the pump automatically attempts to restart once the occlusion is cleared. Upstream occlusion detection monitors for blocked tubing upstream of the pump. Additional alarms cover battery levels (Low, Very Low, and Depleted), door open, side clamp closed, inactivity timeout (2 minutes), infusion complete, dose rate limit exceeded, and system errors. Audio alarm volume is user-adjustable across three levels through the configuration screen.
Wireless Connectivity, CQI, and Data Management
The optional wireless battery module (P/N 35083) adds IEEE 802.11b/g connectivity, enabling the Spectrum V6 to integrate with a hospital’s wireless infrastructure through the SIGMA Gateway for bi-directional communication. Facilities can remotely push updated Master Drug Library versions to deployed V6 pumps and pull pump event logs for Continuous Quality Improvement analysis without requiring individual bedside updates. Note that 802.11b/g wireless battery compatibility on V6 pumps is determined by the pump’s serial number prefix — pumps with a “G” prefix before the serial number are compatible with the b/g wireless module (P/N 35083); pumps without a G prefix support only the 802.11b wireless module. The wireless system supports enterprise-grade security including WPA/WPA2 with AES encryption, 802.1X authentication, PEAP/MSCHAPv2, and EAP-TLS. The pump logs a minimum of 96 hours of pump and drug library history under intensive operating conditions, and a battery-backed real-time clock with 10-year life provides accurate timestamping. Wired connectivity via RS-232 and IrDA is available for drug library transfers and software upgrades where wireless is not present.
Battery Options
The Spectrum V6 supports two battery configurations. The standard non-wireless battery (P/N 35702) is a 1800 mAh, 7.2V Li-Ion pack that delivers at least 8 hours of runtime at 125 ml/h with the backlight on — a strong baseline for ward mobility and transport. The optional wireless battery module (P/N 35083) provides the same 1800 mAh, 7.2V Li-Ion chemistry with the addition of the 802.11b/g radio, delivering approximately 4 hours of runtime at 125 ml/h at the highest backlight setting. Both battery types charge whether the pump is on or off when connected to AC power. Facilities should be aware of the 2020 Baxter Urgent Device Correction regarding battery contact corrosion (see FDA Device Corrections section below) and follow Baxter’s inspection and cleaning guidance to ensure battery integrity. IPR Medical can inspect, service, and supply replacement batteries for the V6 platform.
IV Sets and Consumables
The SIGMA Spectrum V6 is designed for use with Baxter’s standard CONTINU-FLO IV administration sets, which serve for both gravity and pump infusions on the same tubing — reducing changeover time and minimizing waste. Non-DEHP Baxter IV sets are supported within defined flow rate and use-duration limits (10 – 125 ml/h for up to 36 hours; 126 – 250 ml/h for up to 4 hours). Hospira-compatible IV sets are also supported per the pump’s label calibration. IPR Medical stocks compatible Baxter IV administration sets, allowing facilities to source both pumps and sets from a single vendor and eliminate the need for multiple supply relationships.
FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins
The Baxter SIGMA Spectrum Infusion Pump Version 6 has been subject to FDA device corrections and Class I recalls. Facilities operating Spectrum V6 pumps should verify current software versions and review all active corrections with their biomedical engineering and pharmacy teams.
1. Battery Contact Corrosion and Unplanned Shutdown (Class I Recall, 2020) — Affects V6, V8, and IQ: Deviations from the cleaning procedures described in the Operator’s Manual can cause residue buildup or corrosion on the electrical pins of the pump’s rear case and the battery module contacts. Corroded or depressed contacts can prevent the battery from charging or holding a charge. If a pump with corroded contacts is operating solely on battery power, it may shut down without generating an alarm, causing an undetected interruption in medication delivery. Baxter reported 16 serious injuries related to this issue. Facilities were directed to inspect rear-case pins and battery contacts for corrosion or residue, keep pumps connected to AC power whenever possible, use only Baxter-specified compatible cleaning agents, and ensure backup devices are available when infusing critical medications. Baxter subsequently updated the Instructions for Use to recommend routine inspection for residue buildup and depressed pins.
2. Software Version Mismatch After Servicing (Class I Recall, 2024) — Affects V6 and V8: Certain Spectrum pumps were found to have had incorrect software installed during the servicing process — specifically, software intended for the V8 platform may have been installed on V6 pumps, or V6 software may have been installed on V8 pumps. Because the V6 and V8 platforms have distinct pumping mechanism calibrations and clinical workflows, mismatched software can cause inaccurate flow rates (overinfusion or underinfusion), especially over extended run times. The V6 and V8 user interfaces and menu structures also differ significantly, meaning a clinician familiar with one version may experience confusion or delays if presented with the other platform’s software. Facilities can verify a V6 pump’s software version at the Power Status screen upon power-on — the software version on a V6 pump should begin with the number 6. Baxter directed facilities to immediately identify affected serial numbers (located on the bottom of the pump), remove affected pumps from service, verify software versions, and contact Baxter to schedule corrective service.
Action recommended: Facilities operating SIGMA Spectrum V6 pumps should verify the installed software version on each pump, cross-reference serial numbers against Baxter’s active recall lists, and inspect battery contacts for signs of corrosion or residue buildup.
