The B. Braun Infusomat® Space® Version U (software 586U) is a volumetric large-volume infusion pump designed for critical care, ICU, CCU, NICU, PICU, OR, and emergency settings in adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. Delivering 0.1 to 1,200 ml/h at ±5% accuracy with a linear peristaltic pumping mechanism, the Infusomat Space Version U offers a comprehensive therapy profile set including Primary and Secondary (piggyback) infusions, Dose Over Time, Ramp and Taper, Program Mode, Intermittent, PCA, Loading Dose, and wireless AutoProgramming with EHR integration.

Part of the B. Braun Space System, up to three pumps stack on a single pole clamp with a universal interface shared with the Perfusor Space — reducing staff training requirements across the fleet. Dual occlusion sensing monitors both upstream and downstream pressure independently. The pump integrates into SpaceStation for wireless drug library upload, EHR autoprogramming, and fleet management. WiFi requires the B. Braun WiFi battery module, available separately — all standard sales include a non-WiFi Li-Ion battery.

The Space System large-volume pump — same interface, deeper therapy support

The B. Braun Infusomat® Space® Version U is the large-volume counterpart to the Perfusor Space in the B. Braun Space System — sharing the same form factor, pole clamp, universal user interface, and Space System integration, while delivering the volumetric infusion capabilities that syringe pumps cannot match. At 0.1 to 1,200 ml/h with ±5% accuracy, dual upstream and downstream occlusion sensing, dual anti-free flow protection, and a full therapy profile set including primary, secondary (piggyback), TPN, intermittent, and PCA modes, the Infusomat Space Version U is built for the full clinical range from low-rate critical care infusions to high-rate resuscitation and nutritional therapy.

Dual occlusion sensing — upstream and downstream independently

Unlike most large-volume pumps that only monitor downstream pressure, the Infusomat Space monitors both upstream (between the bag and the pump) and downstream (between the pump and the patient) pressure independently. The downstream occlusion pressure is user-selectable across nine levels. The upstream sensor detects closed roller clamps, empty bags, and kinked lines above the pump before they affect delivery — providing an earlier warning upstream that downstream-only sensors cannot catch. Both channels alarm independently with clear on-screen identification of which side has triggered.

Dual anti-free flow protection

The Infusomat Space provides two independent anti-free flow mechanisms. The set-based anti-free flow clip is built into the dedicated B. Braun administration set and clamps automatically when removed from the pump. The pump-based safety clamp engages when the pump door is opened, preventing uncontrolled flow from gravity during line changes. Both engage simultaneously on door open — providing redundant protection against inadvertent free flow during IV set changes, a critical safety feature in ICU, OR, and NICU environments.

Primary and secondary (piggyback) infusion

Version U supports dedicated secondary infusion programming — allowing a piggyback medication to be programmed and infused at a separate rate and VTBI, with the pump automatically returning to the primary infusion rate on completion. This eliminates the need for manual rate adjustment during piggyback delivery and reduces the risk of the clinician forgetting to return to the primary rate after the secondary bag is finished.

AutoProgramming, wireless drug library, and EHR integration

Version U supports AutoProgramming — the pump receives drug orders wirelessly from the EHR or from SpaceStation with SpaceCom, pre-populating drug name, concentration, and dose for clinician confirmation before the infusion starts. Wireless drug library uploads via SpaceStation allow pharmacy to push library updates fleet-wide without physically handling each pump. Note that wireless functionality requires the B. Braun WiFi battery module, available separately — all standard unit sales include a non-WiFi Li-Ion battery.

WiFi battery — available separately

All Infusomat Space Version U units sold by IPR Medical include a standard non-WiFi Li-Ion battery. To enable wireless connectivity — including wireless drug library uploads, EHR AutoProgramming, and SpaceStation communication — the B. Braun Battery Pack SP with WiFi is required and must be purchased separately. Contact IPR Medical to add a WiFi battery module to your order.

B. Braun Space System integration — stack up to 24 pumps

The Infusomat Space shares the B. Braun Space System platform with the Perfusor Space syringe pump. Up to three pumps stack and interlock on a single pole clamp. Through SpaceStation, up to 24 pumps can be organized in a single bedside tower — combining Infusomat and Perfusor Space units with a shared interface, shared drug library management, and shared EHR connectivity. The universal keypad and menu navigation across all Space pumps substantially reduces staff training time compared to managing multiple different pump platforms.
