Overview

The Philips IntelliVue MP30 (M8002A) is a compact, portable multi-parameter patient monitor built for intermediate care, ambulatory surgery, post-operative care, special procedures, and lower acuity clinical environments, as well as in-hospital patient transport. As a member of the IntelliVue family, the MP30 shares the common IntelliVue user interface and modular technological platform with the broader MP-series — from the MP2 and MP5 through the MP40–MP90 — ensuring that clinical staff already familiar with IntelliVue can work at the MP30 bedside with minimal retraining. Despite its compact footprint, the MP30 delivers robust clinical measurement capability through its modular Multi-Measurement Server (MMS) and optional MMS extensions, supporting parameters including ECG and arrhythmia, SpO2, NIBP, capnography, invasive pressure, temperature, and cardiac output. The MP30 is designed for active monitoring environments where portability matters as much as clinical depth: the system weighs less than 13.2 lbs combined with the MMS and battery, can run on battery power for up to five hours, and connects seamlessly to the Philips IntelliVue Clinical Network for enterprise data continuity.

Display and User Interface

The MP30 features a 10.4-inch (26 cm) color TFT LCD display with SVGA resolution and a wide viewing angle, delivering clear waveform and numeric presentation in a compact package. The display integrates the processing unit and power supply into a single device, reducing cabling and simplifying the overall system architecture. On the MP30, a touchscreen with a resistive touch surface is standard, allowing clinicians to access many monitoring functions through direct on-screen interaction. This distinguishes the MP30 from the MP20, which uses only the integrated navigation point as its primary input device. The MP30 also includes the integrated navigation point as a supplementary input tool — its dial can be rotated for precise on-screen navigation, with tactile resistance at each step. Additional supported input devices include PS/2-compatible mice, trackballs, barcode readers, and an optional Remote SpeedPoint that combines joystick and dial control for full two-dimensional screen navigation. When alpha or numeric entry is required — such as for patient demographics — an on-screen keyboard appears automatically. SmartKeys with intuitive icons provide rapid access to common monitoring tasks directly from the screen without navigating through menu hierarchies.

Clinical Measurements and Module Support

The MP30’s measurement capabilities are delivered primarily through the Multi-Measurement Server (MMS, M3001A), which connects without cables to the rear of the monitor. The MMS provides ECG and arrhythmia analysis, respiration, SpO2, NIBP, and an invasive pressure or temperature port — along with 12-lead ECG capability, multi-lead arrhythmia detection, and 12-lead ST analysis — and stores up to eight hours of patient trend data including demographic information. The IntelliVue X2 (M3002A) multi-measurement module can be used as an alternative to the MMS and additionally provides CO2 measurement. MMS extensions slot directly onto the MMS to expand the measurement menu: the M3015A adds Microstream sidestream CO2 with an optional invasive pressure/temperature port; the M3014A adds mainstream or sidestream CO2 along with additional pressure and temperature channels and optional cardiac output; and the M3012A adds temperature, invasive blood pressure, an additional invasive pressure or temperature port, and optional cardiac output and continuous cardiac output. Arrhythmia analysis uses the Philips ST/AR algorithm to detect ventricular arrhythmias, calculate heart rate, and generate alarms including asystole, bradycardia, and ventricular fibrillation. ST segment analysis supports up to 12 leads in adult patients, with alarm limits, ST Snippets for baseline comparison, and the ST Map application for a graphical visualization of ST changes across the frontal and horizontal planes. QT/QTc interval monitoring provides the measured QT interval and calculated heart-rate-corrected QTc value. SpO2 is delivered via Philips FAST SpO2 technology using Fourier Artifact Suppression Technology for reliable performance even with low perfusion. Optional Bispectral Index (BIS) monitoring is supported via a BIS interface for anesthesia depth assessment in OR environments.

Portability and Power

The MP30 is purpose-built for clinical environments where monitors must move with patients. Combined with the M3001A MMS and one battery, the system weighs less than 13.2 lbs and measures less than 13.6 x 10.8 x 9 inches, making it manageable for transport across departments and floors. The monitor supports one or two M4605A lithium-ion batteries (10.8 V, 6000 mAh each), providing up to five hours of operation on battery power with a basic monitoring configuration. The transition from AC power to battery operation during transport is designed to be seamless — there is no need to disconnect patient cables or adjust measurement or monitor settings when moving between bedside and transport modes. The MMS continues to store patient trends and demographic data during transport, and upon reconnection to a new IntelliVue monitor, automatically uploads stored data without requiring recabling or manual reconfiguration. Mounting solutions designed for the MP30 enable quick disconnect for transport and rapid reconnection to the wall or roll mount upon return to the care area, supporting efficient department workflows in post-operative, intermediate care, and transport settings.

Trending, Event Surveillance, and Clinical Decision Support

The MP30 provides a comprehensive suite of data management and clinical decision support tools. The trend database stores data from up to 16 measurement numerics, with configurable sampling intervals of 12 seconds, one minute, or five minutes, and a storage window of four to 48 hours. Tabular and graphic trend views are available on screen, and an extensive range of patient reports can be printed locally or to centrally connected printers — including vital signs, graphic trends, 12-lead ECG reports, alarm limit reports, event review and episode reports, cardiac output reports, OxyCRG reports, and drug calculator reports. For neonatal patients, the Neonatal Event Review (NER) application stores four-minute episodes sampled four times per second for each event, supporting documentation of rapidly changing neonatal conditions. Combi-events correlate apnea with bradycardia and/or desaturations for integrated neonatal clinical review. The optional OxyCRG screen presents beat-to-beat heart rate, an oxygenation trend, and compressed respiration simultaneously — a neonatal-optimized summary view. The optional drug calculator supports calculation of IV drug dose, rate, amount, volume, concentration, and standardized rate. ProtocolWatch, including the SSC Sepsis Protocol, runs as an integrated clinical protocol application. Horizon trends provide a graphical visualization tool for pattern recognition of patient clinical status. The clinical calculation set supports hemodynamic, oxygenation, and ventilation calculations including cardiac index, stroke volume, systemic vascular resistance, oxygen consumption, minute volume, and more.

Network and EMR Integration

The MP30 connects to the Philips IntelliVue Clinical Network through a standard wired LAN connection, with optional IEEE 802.11 a/b/g wireless networking (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz ISM bands) and optional compatibility with the Philips Cellular Telemetry System (CTS) in WMTS and ISM bands for telemetry infrastructure environments. When networked, the MP30 integrates with the Philips IntelliVue Information Center central monitoring station, enabling simultaneous alarming at the bedside and at the central station, bed-to-bed overview of all monitored patients in a care group, and the Universal ADT feature for shared patient admit/discharge/transfer information that need only be entered once. An optional MIB/RS-232 interface board provides two fully isolated MIB ports for data export to automated anesthesia record keepers, personal computers, or other connected systems. The optional Flexible Nurse Call Relay provides three general alarm relays and one power-fail alarm for integration with external nurse call systems. When a patient is transferred, disconnecting the MMS from the MP30 and reconnecting it to a new IntelliVue monitor carries the patient’s demographic data and stored trends to the new location automatically, requiring no re-entry of patient information.
