Overview
The Philips IntelliVue MP50 is a compact, portable, multi-parameter patient monitor designed for intermediate care, step-down, and general ward environments — and equally capable during in-hospital patient transport. It sits within Philips’ flagship IntelliVue family, which spans from the bedside-portable MP2 to the high-acuity MP90, and shares a unified user interface, modular hardware platform, and network architecture with every monitor in the series. This common platform is a meaningful operational advantage for facilities that already run IntelliVue monitors: clinical staff can move between units without relearning the system, biomedical engineers service a standardized hardware architecture, and IT teams manage one network integration framework rather than multiple. The MP50 is distinguished within the MP40/MP50 pair by its resistive touchscreen — a feature exclusive to the MP50 in this sub-family — which enables one-touch access to monitoring functions directly on the screen. Whether used as a stationary bedside monitor on a general floor unit or deployed for patient transport, the MP50 is configurable for virtually any monitoring scenario through its modular MMS slot system and flexible software profiles.
Display and User Interface
The MP50 features a 12-inch (30.5 cm) color LCD TFT display with SVGA resolution and a wide viewing angle — delivering high-resolution waveforms and large numerics that are readable from across the room. The resistive touchscreen, standard on the MP50, allows clinicians to interact directly with the display using simple one-touch commands, making many routine functions faster to access than on navigation-point-only monitors. In addition to the touchscreen, the MP50 also includes an integrated navigation point — a dial with tactile step feedback and four dedicated hardkeys (Silence, Alarms Off/Pause Alarms, Back, and Main Screen) — as well as support for a remote control, remote SpeedPoint, PS/2 or USB mouse, trackball, keyboard, and barcode reader. This breadth of input options lets facilities configure the monitor to suit their workflow and user preferences.
The display supports up to six simultaneous real-time waveforms with color-coded waves and numerics, flexible layout options including wave overlap, and dynamic wave sizing based on the number of configured waveforms. For 12-lead ECG work, the screen can display all 12 real-time ECG waves with a rhythm strip and all ST values simultaneously. The monitor ships with 10 preset screen configurations and allows full operator customization — waveforms, numerics, data labels, and screen layout are all adjustable. SmartKeys with intuitive icons give fast one-step access to common monitoring tasks, and on-screen Basic Help provides plain-language explanations of INOP and alarm messages to support less-experienced staff at the bedside.
Clinical Measurements and Module Support
The IntelliVue MP50’s measurement capability is built around a modular architecture that allows facilities to configure the monitor precisely to the clinical environment it will serve. The core M3001A Multi-Measurement Module (MMS) connects cable-free to the rear of the monitor and provides ECG/Arrhythmia, Respiration, SpO2, NIBP, and Invasive Pressure or Temperature — with full 12-lead ECG capability, multi-lead arrhythmia analysis, and 12-lead ST analysis built in. The M3002A X2 Multi-Measurement Module extends this with integrated CO2 measurement and 24-hour trend storage.
MMS Extensions slot directly onto the MMS or X2 to add further measurements: the M3014A adds mainstream or sidestream CO2, a second and third IBP or Temperature channel, and optional Cardiac Output; the M3015A/B adds Microstream CO2 with optional IBP/Temperature; the M3012A adds Temperature, IBP, and optional Cardiac Output or Continuous Cardiac Output. Four integrated plug-in module slots on the monitor chassis accept individual measurement modules for Invasive Blood Pressure, SvO2/ScvO2, Temperature, Cardiac Output, Spirometry, Transcutaneous Gas (neonatal), SpO2, EEG, and BIS. The monitor also interfaces with Philips IntelliVue G1 and G5 Gas Analyzers for anesthetic gas monitoring of the five most commonly used agents plus N2O and CO2, with MAC calculations displayed on screen. SpO2 compatibility spans Philips, Masimo, and Nellcor technologies, giving facilities flexibility in sensor procurement and standardization. Pulse Pressure Variation (PPV) can be derived from beat-to-beat arterial pressure values, supporting fluid responsiveness assessment in critical patients.
Portability and Power
The IntelliVue MP50 is designed with portability as a core requirement, not an afterthought. Its compact, ergonomic form factor with comfortable handle and rugged housing makes it well-suited for in-hospital patient transport — moving patients between the floor, imaging, procedure rooms, or the OR without interrupting monitoring continuity. With optional battery operation, the MP50 achieves up to five hours of runtime in a basic monitoring configuration (MMS connected, NIBP every 15 minutes, automatic brightness) using two new batteries. In extended monitoring configurations — adding MMS extension, Recorder, Pressure, and Temperature modules — runtime is approximately four hours. The monitor has no internal hard drive and no cooling fan, which contributes to its quiet, compact, and reliable form factor with fast startup times. The integrated display, processing unit, and power supply are all contained within the single device enclosure, minimizing the number of components required for transport. Settings Profiles allow rapid reconfiguration when the device moves between care areas, reducing setup time at the destination bedside.
Trending, Event Surveillance, and Clinical Decision Support
The MP50 provides multiple tools to help clinicians track patient trajectory and support clinical decision-making. Trend storage depends on the connected module: up to eight hours of patient trends are stored in the M3001A MMS, while the M3002A X2 stores up to 24 hours. Trend data can be viewed in both tabular and graphic formats, allowing clinicians to juxtapose real-time measurements with historical trended data and to organize every on-screen element as desired. The Parameter Histogram View within the Vital Signs Trend display provides a graphical overview of parameter stability over a selected time period — helpful for assessing whether a patient’s condition has been consistently stable or intermittently abnormal. The ST Map application shows ST changes over time in two multi-axis spider diagrams, supporting early detection of ischemic events. Basic Event Surveillance runs continuously in the background to automatically detect signs of patient status deterioration and trigger appropriate alerts. For neonatal patients, the Neonatal Event Review function maintains a record of rapidly changing clinical conditions. Clinical support tools also include a Drug Calculator, ventilation calculations, hemodynamic and oxygenation calculations, and a Timer application for procedure-related timing. The wave-freeze function allows clinicians to freeze waveforms on screen and use cursors to measure specific wave segments, useful for detailed rhythm analysis at the bedside.
Network and EMR Integration
The IntelliVue MP50 is built for clinical network integration across the hospital enterprise. IntelliVue portal technology provides bedside access to data from a broad range of hospital information systems — including pharmacy, laboratory, ECG management systems, radiology PACS, and host-based hospital systems — delivered directly to the monitor screen without requiring a separate terminal or workstation. The monitor supports both wired LAN connectivity and IEEE 802.11 a/b/g wireless networking in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz ISM bands, and is additionally compatible with the Philips Cellular Telemetry System (CTS) in WMTS and ISM bands, enabling integration into broader telemetry infrastructure for facilities that use it. The bed-to-bed overview feature allows clinicians to see an overview of all beds in their care from a single monitor, and alarms from remote beds can be silenced locally. A single patient can be assigned to both a fixed monitor and a telemetry device simultaneously, with telemetry data displayed as a fixed session on the monitor screen. Data Out capability exports numerics to connected systems, and VueLink or IntelliBridge EC10 modules enable interfacing with third-party external devices.
FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins
The FDA has issued multiple Class 2 device corrections for the Philips IntelliVue patient monitor family. Class 2 corrections are defined by the FDA as situations where use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote. Based on confirmed FDA records, the IntelliVue family — including the MP50 — has been subject to device corrections related to software behavior across multiple software revision cycles. The FDA’s device corrections database lists corrections for Philips IntelliVue Patient Monitors under records including FDA recall #107347 (last updated January 2026) and #130270 (last updated May 2022), among others applicable to the broader IntelliVue platform. Because the FDA’s accessdata portal renders these correction records dynamically, facilities are strongly encouraged to query the FDA Medical Device Recalls Database directly using the device name “IntelliVue” or the manufacturer name “Philips” to retrieve current, complete correction details including product codes, affected software revisions, and corrective actions required.
Facilities operating the IntelliVue MP50 should confirm which software revision is installed on their units and cross-reference against FDA correction records and any Philips Field Safety Notices or Customer Letters issued for that revision. Philips has periodically issued software updates as corrective actions; if a facility has not applied recommended updates, they should contact their Philips service representative or a qualified biomedical engineering team to verify compliance. Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.
