Overview

The GE E-PSMP is GE Healthcare’s most fully integrated single-width hemodynamic plug-in module. In one module slot it provides 12-lead ECG with ST segment analysis, impedance respiration, GE SpO2 with plethysmography, two invasive pressure channels (P1, P2), two temperature channels (T1, T2), and DINAMAP-based NIBP. The “P” suffix distinguishes E-PSMP from the otherwise identical E-PSM, which omits the dual invasive pressure channels. The module operates as a docking module on the S/5 FM and S/5 F-CU5P frames, and as a plug-in module in the F5 and F7 frames used by the CARESCAPE Monitor B650 and B850 (with the Module Bus Adapter when cabled to a frame). The module can also be removed from its host frame and used near the patient on an IV pole or anesthesia machine, making it a versatile choice for OR, PACU, ICU, and intra-hospital transport workflows.

Display and User Interface

The E-PSMP itself does not include a screen. Display, alarms, trends, and configuration are managed by the host monitor — the CARESCAPE B450, B650, or B850 in CARESCAPE deployments, and the S/5 FM in S/5 deployments. The module front panel carries dedicated direct-function keys for Auto On/Off (start/stop NIBP autocycle), Start/Cancel (single NIBP), Zero P1, and Zero P2, allowing the clinician to act on the most common hemodynamic tasks without navigating host-monitor menus. ECG, SpO2, NIBP, two IBP, and two temperature connectors are arranged on the front panel for clean cable management at the bedside. The module ECG, SpO2, NIBP, IBP, and temperature waveforms and numerics inherit the host monitor’s screen layout, color scheme, and care-area configuration, so deployments standardized around CARESCAPE OR, ICU, ED, or PACU profiles continue to look and behave identically when the E-PSMP is docked.

Clinical Measurements and Hemodynamic Capability

The ECG section supports 3-, 5-, 6-, or 10-leadwire patient cables, displaying 3-, 7-, 8-, or 12-lead ECG simultaneously on CARESCAPE hosts (3-, 7-, or 12-lead on S/5 hosts). ST segment analysis is calculated continuously from 8-QRS averaged complexes for up to 12 leads, with an ST level range of -20 to +20 mm on CARESCAPE platforms, anterior/inferior/lateral ST limits, and ST trend storage up to 72 hours. QT and QTc values are calculated with 5-, 6-, or 10-leadwire configurations using the 12SL and 12RL analysis algorithms when licensed on the host. Lethal arrhythmia detection is standard; full arrhythmia recognition is enabled by host monitor software licensing. Impedance respiration is measured transthoracically with a range of 4 to 120 breaths/min and accuracy of ±5% or ±5 breaths/min. The dual invasive pressure channels handle a range of -40 to 320 mmHg with ±5% or ±2 mmHg accuracy and a 5 µV/V/mmHg transducer sensitivity standard. NIBP uses GE’s DINAMAP oscillometric algorithm and is intended for patients weighing more than 11 lbs (5 kg). Two temperature channels with differential T2-T1 calculation cover 50 to 113 °F using GE Healthcare temperature probes or defibrillator-proof YSI 400 series probes.

SpO2 Technology and Module Family Context

The E-PSMP integrates GE SpO2 directly inside the module. Facilities standardized on Masimo SET or Nellcor OxiMax pulse oximetry typically pair the E-PSMP (or its non-IBP sibling E-PSM) with a separate single-parameter SpO2 module — E-MASIMO for Masimo, E-NSATX for Nellcor — installed in an adjacent module slot. This design separates the SpO2 vendor decision from the rest of the hemodynamic stack, which is one reason the E-PSM and E-PSMP remain in service alongside newer parameter modules. Within the broader E-Series catalog, the closely related modules are E-PSM (no dual IBP), E-PRESTN and E-PRETN (Pressure, Respiration, ECG, Temperature, NIBP — all hemodynamic plug-ins), and E-RESTN (no NIBP). The E-PSMP is the only module in this family that combines NIBP, dual IBP, ST analysis, two temperatures, and SpO2 in a single slot, which is what makes it the consolidation choice for slot-constrained CARESCAPE B650 or B450 deployments.

Software Versions and Platform Evolution

The E-PSMP is a hardware acquisition module; its parameter measurement firmware lives on three internal boards — the STP (SpO2/Temperature/Pressure) board, the ECG board, and the NIBP board — each carrying its own processor and flash memory. Display software, alarm logic, ST trend storage, arrhythmia analysis, and 12-lead 12SL/12RL diagnostic interpretation all run on the host monitor, not on the module. This means the E-PSMP’s clinical capabilities track the host monitor software baseline. On CARESCAPE Monitor B450, B650, and B850 platforms, GE has shipped multiple software versions over the product lifecycle, each adding features such as expanded arrhythmia analysis, additional alarm priorities, ST snapshot management, and care-area specific software packages for OR, PACU, ICU, ED, and NICU. The same physical E-PSMP module can move between hosts running different versions, which is one reason GE customers cross-deploy the module across modular fleets. Two front-panel mechanical revisions are catalogued by GE Service Shop — E-PSMP Rev. 00 and E-PSMP Rev. 01 — with corresponding front panel labeling assemblies. Module assembly SKUs vary by regional catalog and language configuration; IPR Medical can confirm the exact GE part number that matches a given facility’s revision and language requirement.

Service and Maintenance Considerations

The E-PSMP is service-friendly compared to the older M-series black modules. The three internal boards (STP, ECG, NIBP) are individually accessible and individually replaceable as field-replaceable units. The NIBP pneumatic stack — pump, manifold, and air filter — is also serviceable, with GE Service Shop catalogues distinct FRUs for the pump unit, manifold unit, module bus connector board, and the front panel unit (which itself is sold in language-specific variants). Common in-service issues seen on the secondary market include NIBP cuff inflation faults (typically pump or manifold), worn or damaged front-panel connectors (especially the ECG and IBP D-sub connectors), and intermittent SpO2 due to STP board age. NIBP calibration is performed against an external manometer through the host monitor’s service interface, and invasive pressure calibration is required whenever a transducer or transducer adapter cable is replaced. The E-PSMP and E-PSM share most pneumatic and ECG board parts, which simplifies parts pooling for facilities running both variants. IPR Medical performs full functional, calibration, and electrical safety testing as part of refurbishment.

Trending, Event Surveillance, and Clinical Decision Support

Clinical data acquired by the E-PSMP — ECG, ST, IBP, NIBP, SpO2, temperature, respiration — is sent over the module bus to the host monitor, which is responsible for trend storage, alarm management, event surveillance, and EMR export. ST trends from the E-PSMP are stored at one QRST complex every 10 minutes, with manual storage of up to 6 reference complexes, and a maximum 72-hour ST trend window on CARESCAPE hosts. Arrhythmia events captured from the E-PSMP ECG channel are time-stamped and stored on the host for review and printing. Because the host monitor manages trending and alarms, the same E-PSMP module can move between an OR-configured CARESCAPE B650 and an ICU-configured B850 and present care-area-appropriate trends without any module-side configuration change. Facilities running the CARESCAPE Central Station can aggregate E-PSMP data centrally; facilities using only bedside trending can review trends on the host monitor itself.

Network and EMR Integration

The E-PSMP itself is not a networked device — it communicates only with its host monitor over the module bus, with 6 kV opto-isolation between the patient-applied parts and the bus communication. EMR connectivity, MUSE export, and CARESCAPE Central Station communication are all managed by the host monitor’s MC and IX network interfaces. On CARESCAPE Monitor B650 and B850 hosts, the E-PSMP’s hemodynamic data flows through the host’s MC Network to the CARESCAPE Central Station and through the IX Network to the MUSE cardiology server (for diagnostic 12-lead ECG transmission), Citrix-published applications, and HL7-based EMR interfaces. This means an E-PSMP module deployed in a facility’s existing CARESCAPE infrastructure inherits whatever EMR integration the host monitor is already configured for — no separate networking work is required at the module level.
