The sensor uses a lightweight ear clip that attaches to the earlobe and holds the emitter and detector in alignment across the tissue. The clip applies quickly without tape, which makes it practical for spot checks, stress testing, and situations where finger sensors are dislodged by hand movement. It is sized for adult patients weighing more than 66 lbs (30 kg). The 3.3 ft (1.0 m) cable terminates in a triple-keyed male 9-pin LNCS connector. Ear clip sensors wear at the hinge, the contact pads, and the connector. Replace the sensor when the clip no longer holds the earlobe firmly, the contact pads are torn or hardened, the emitter or detector windows are scratched or discolored, the LNCS connector is cracked or has bent pins, or the cable jacket shows cuts or kinks. Persistent “sensor off” alarms, low signal quality, or readings that drop out when the patient turns their head also point to a failing sensor.
