Overview

The Philips IntelliVue M3001A (Option A04) is the newer-hardware-generation Nellcor OxiMax-compatible configuration of the IntelliVue Multi-Measurement Module. Like the A02, it provides Nellcor OxiMax-compatible SpO2 alongside ECG with arrhythmia and ST monitoring, impedance respiration, and oscillometric NBP to any compatible IntelliVue host monitor. The clinical measurement set is identical to the A02 — the distinction is entirely internal. The A04 is built on Hardware Revision C, the newest internal platform for the M3001A product line, identified by serial number prefixes DE610, DE632, DE717, and DE907. On this hardware generation, the DC/DC power circuit is integrated onto the main board rather than implemented as a separate component as in the earlier HW Rev A and HW Rev B units associated with the A02 option. This integration simplifies the internal assembly, changes which replacement parts are applicable, and affects software revision compatibility at the top end of the supported range. Facilities purchasing M3001A A04 units or parts should confirm that their host monitor software revision falls within the compatibility range for HW Rev C hardware. All other operational characteristics — data storage, host compatibility, MMS extension support, and SpO2 sensor interface — are the same as the A02.

Option A04 vs. A02 — Understanding the Hardware Difference

Both the A02 and A04 use a Nellcor OxiMax-compatible SpO2 interface, accept the same OxiMax sensors via the M1943NL adapter cable, and deliver the same clinical parameters. The difference between them is hardware generation, not clinical capability. Philips produced the M3001A across multiple internal hardware revisions over the product’s lifespan. The A02 option is associated with HW Rev A and HW Rev B units, which include a separate DC/DC board as a distinct internal component. The A04 option is associated with HW Rev C units — serial number prefixes DE610, DE632, DE717, and DE907 — where the DC/DC power circuit has been integrated onto the main board, per Philips service documentation (SB86200577). This architectural change means the parameter board part numbers differ between the two options: the A04 uses OEM parameter board M3001-68555, while the A02 uses a different assembly. These boards are not interchangeable. For biomedical technicians, this matters when ordering replacement parts — always confirm the hardware revision from the serial number prefix and option string on the module’s rear label before sourcing internal components. Nellcor OxiMax SpO2 and NBP Measurement

The Nellcor OxiMax-compatible SpO2 interface in the M3001A A04 provides SpO2 saturation, pulse rate, and a real-time plethysmogram waveform using the same OxiMax sensor ecosystem as the A02. OxiMax sensors connect to the module’s SpO2 port via the M1943NL adapter cable, which provides the 8-pin D-Connect to OxiMax interface. The OxiMax platform — now maintained by Medtronic — includes a broad catalog of adult, pediatric, and neonatal sensors for finger, forehead, ear, and multisite applications, and each OxiMax sensor carries an embedded identification chip that communicates sensor type and calibration status to the monitor. Facilities already running Nellcor OxiMax sensors on A02 modules will find the A04 uses identical sensors and the same adapter cable, making the two options functionally interchangeable at the bedside. Non-invasive blood pressure measurement uses the oscillometric method, configured through the host IntelliVue monitor’s interface, with NBP results feeding into the module’s trend record. The NBP pneumatic assembly requires a calibration performance check once every two years per OEM service documentation.

Clinical Measurements — ECG, Arrhythmia, and ST

ECG monitoring in the M3001A A04 supports 3-lead and 5-lead configurations using the connected ECG trunk cable and leadset. Arrhythmia analysis is processed through the host IntelliVue monitor’s alarm system and delivers notification for lethal and non-lethal rhythm events with configurable alarm limits and lead selection. ST segment monitoring provides continuous analysis of elevation and depression across the monitored leads, with threshold-based alarms and on-screen visualization on the host display. Respiration rate is derived from thoracic impedance using the ECG electrodes already in place, requiring no additional sensors beyond the ECG cable setup. All alarm processing and parameter display are managed by the host IntelliVue monitor once the M3001A is docked or connected via MSL cable. The A04 option designation applies only to the SpO2 interface and internal hardware platform — the ECG, arrhythmia, ST, and respiration hardware performs identically to the A02 and other M3001A variants.

Patient Data Portability and Trend Storage

The M3001A A04 stores its patient record internally, following the same architecture used across all M3001A configurations. Up to eight hours of numeric trend data at one-minute resolution, patient demographic information, active measurement settings, and NBP calibration data are all resident within the module itself rather than on the host monitor. When the A04 connects to a new IntelliVue host, this data uploads automatically without manual re-entry, giving the receiving monitor a complete longitudinal view of the patient’s vital signs. The module retains the full patient record for up to six hours while disconnected from any host, supporting clean handoffs between units, procedure areas, and monitoring locations without data loss. Facilities running OxiMax sensors will find that both the A02 and A04 travel with the patient in exactly the same way — the same Nellcor sensor remains attached, the same trend data persists in the module, and reconnection to any compatible IntelliVue host instantly restores the full monitoring record.

MMS Extensions and Configuration Upgrades

The M3001A A04 standard package covers ECG, respiration, Nellcor OxiMax SpO2, and NBP. Facilities requiring invasive pressure and temperature measurement can source the A04C06 configuration, which adds one invasive pressure channel and one temperature channel. The A04C12 configuration adds conventional 12-lead ECG capability using a 10-electrode lead set. The A04C18 configuration provides the full complement — 12-lead ECG, invasive pressure, and temperature — alongside the A04 standard parameters. MMS extension modules can also be physically attached to expand measurement capability: the M3015A adds sidestream CO2; the M3016A adds mainstream CO2; and the M3012A adds an additional invasive pressure channel, temperature, and CO2 in a single unit. These extensions attach directly to the M3001A and inherit power and network connectivity from the host monitor through the module, requiring no separate power supply or dedicated MSL cable.

Host Monitor Connectivity and System Integration

The M3001A A04 connects to compatible IntelliVue host monitors in the same two physical configurations used by all M3001A variants — direct dock to the rear of the host monitor, or remote via MSL cable. Once connected, all monitoring and alarm functions are managed through the host monitor’s interface. The A04 is compatible with the full IntelliVue MP-series platform (MP20 through MP90), the MX-series monitors, and the M3046A (M/M4 series) running Release E or higher. Biomedical staff should verify that the specific host monitor’s software revision is supported by the HW Rev C hardware before deploying A04 units; Philips published compatibility matrix charts correlating M3001A serial number prefix to supported software revisions, and IPR Medical can assist in confirming compatibility for specific fleet configurations.
