The B. Braun Perfusor® Space® Version U (software 588U) is a precision syringe infusion pump designed for critical care, anesthesia, NICU, PICU, OR, and emergency settings in adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. Version U is the most advanced software iteration of the Perfusor Space platform for the US market, adding Target Controlled Infusion (TCI/TIVA), Take Over Mode (TOM) for seamless syringe-to-syringe handoff, AutoProgramming with EHR integration, wireless drug library upload, and barcoding to the core Perfusor Space feature set.
Delivering ±2% accuracy from 0.01 ml/h up to 60 ml/h (depending on syringe size), with nine adjustable occlusion pressure levels, an automatic piston brake to prevent inadvertent bolus during syringe changes, and a post-occlusion bolus reduction system, the Perfusor Space is one of the most capable syringe pumps in clinical use. It is the first syringe pump to receive FDA clearance for air and road transport. The KeyGuard non-numeric keypad prevents zero-vs-decimal programming errors, and the pump integrates into the B. Braun Space System — stacking up to three pumps on a single pole clamp and connecting to SpaceStation for wireless fleet management.

The Perfusor® Space® Version U runs software 588U — the most feature-complete US software version of B. Braun’s industry-standard syringe infusion platform. It adds Target Controlled Infusion (TCI/TIVA), Take Over Mode (TOM) for seamless syringe-to-syringe handoff, AutoProgramming with EHR integration, wireless drug library upload, and barcode medication verification to the already comprehensive Perfusor Space core. The underlying pump hardware is unchanged: ±2% accuracy, nine adjustable occlusion pressure levels, automatic piston brake, post-occlusion bolus reduction, and FDA clearance for air and road transport — all in a 3 lb package that stacks with up to two other Space pumps on a single pole clamp.
TCI / TIVA — Target Controlled Infusion
Version U enables TCI (Target Controlled Infusion) for compatible drug models including Propofol and Remifentanil. TCI calculates and continuously adjusts the infusion rate to maintain a target plasma or effect-site concentration entered by the clinician, rather than requiring manual rate programming. This is a significant feature for anesthesia departments running TIVA (Total Intravenous Anesthesia) protocols. TCI requires trained anesthesia personnel and should not be used simultaneously with a second infusion of the same agent.
Take Over Mode — uninterrupted infusion during syringe changes
Take Over Mode (TOM) allows a second Perfusor Space to automatically start infusing at the same rate the moment the first pump’s syringe runs empty. This enables truly uninterrupted delivery of high-risk medications — vasopressors, sedation, insulin, heparin — without the clinician manually restarting the second pump. Both pumps must be running the same drug at the same concentration, and a data connection must be active between the two pumps via SpaceStation.
AutoProgramming, EHR integration, and barcoding
Version U supports AutoProgramming — the pump can receive drug orders wirelessly directly from the EHR system or from SpaceStation with SpaceCom, pre-populating drug name, concentration, and dose parameters for clinician confirmation before infusion starts. Barcode scanning allows medication label verification at the pump to confirm the right drug and concentration are loaded before programming begins. These two features together close the loop between pharmacy, the EHR, and bedside administration — the core of a complete closed-loop medication safety workflow.
1,500-entry drug library with 30 categories and wireless updates
The Version U drug library holds up to 1,500 drug names with therapy data, drug-specific hard and soft dose limits, default values, and clinical advisories — organized into 30 categories with up to 50 care units and 15 patient profiles configurable per institution. DoseGuard software powered by FDB Infusion Knowledge supports library development and maintenance. Wireless drug library uploads via SpaceStation allow pharmacy to push library updates fleet-wide without physically handling each pump. Note that wireless functionality requires the B. Braun WiFi battery module, which is available for separate purchase and is not included with standard unit sales.
WiFi battery — available separately
All Perfusor Space Version U units sold by IPR Medical include a standard non-WiFi Li-Ion battery. To enable wireless connectivity — including wireless drug library uploads, EHR AutoProgramming, and SpaceStation communication — the B. Braun WiFi battery module is required and must be purchased separately. Contact IPR Medical to add a WiFi battery module to your order. Units can also be operated with a NiMH battery for extended runtime, also available separately.
Core safety architecture and FDA transport clearance
The Perfusor Space remains the first syringe pump FDA-cleared for air and road transport with those indications explicitly in the cleared labeling — the standard of care for critical care transport teams and flight nurses. The KeyGuard non-numeric keypad prevents zero-vs-decimal programming errors by design. The automatic drive arm retracts and the integrated piston brake engages during syringe changes to prevent inadvertent bolus. Post-occlusion bolus reduction software limits bolus after occlusion clearing to ≤0.2 ml. Maximum single-fault delivery volume is 0.1 ml.
