Toco + Smart Pulse + MECG/DECG/IUP in one transducer

The Avalon CL Toco+ MP Transducer (866075) is the most versatile transducer in the Avalon CL family. Its primary function is external uterine activity monitoring via a pressure-sensitive Toco sensor on the patient’s abdomen. The “MP” designation refers to Avalon Smart Pulse — an integrated maternal pulse sensor built into the transducer housing that captures the mother’s pulse at the same location as the Toco. Beyond those two simultaneous measurements, the 866075 includes a multi-purpose connector that accepts either a maternal ECG cable, a fetal scalp electrode (DECG) lead, or an intrauterine pressure (IUP) catheter adapter — letting a single cableless transducer deliver up to three concurrent signal streams to the monitor.

Smart Pulse and cross-channel verification

One of the most significant clinical risks in fetal monitoring is mistaking a maternal heart rate for a fetal heart rate during labor, particularly when the fetal signal is weak or the mother’s heart rate is elevated. Avalon Smart Pulse addresses this directly. Because the 866075 captures the maternal pulse in the same location as the Toco, the Avalon monitor can run Cross-Channel Verification (CCV) continuously — automatically detecting when the maternal and fetal heart rates coincide and alerting clinicians before an FHR misinterpretation occurs. This capability is a core reason facilities standardize on Avalon CL for high-acuity L&D environments.

Cableless mobility for labor and delivery

Freedom of movement during labor is linked to patient comfort, shorter labor times, and better overall experience. The 866075 eliminates the patient cable entirely — the transducer communicates wirelessly with the Avalon CL Base Station (866074) over Philips IntelliVue Instrument Telemetry at ranges up to 100 m (300 ft) in line of sight. Mothers can walk the halls, use a birthing ball, shower, or labor in a tub without losing the uterine activity trace. The transducer housing is watertight, so underwater monitoring is explicitly supported for hydrotherapy and water birth protocols.

Works with the entire Avalon FM family

The 866075 is part of the Avalon CL system and requires the Avalon CL Base Station (866074). That base station in turn connects to any fetal sensor socket on the Philips Avalon FM20, FM30, FM40, or FM50 fetal monitor — or to the rear telemetry connectors on the FM40 and FM50. Avalon fetal monitor software release J.3 or higher is required. Up to four CL transducers and two IntelliVue CL Pods can be assigned to a single base station, so a complete cableless kit can monitor twins or triplets plus maternal SpO2 and NBP simultaneously from one hub.

Automatic assignment, charging, and Transducer Finder

Setup is plug-and-play: dock the 866075 in any slot on the base station and it is automatically assigned, paired, and recharged. A green or yellow LED on the transducer confirms when it is ready for use, and the built-in Transducer Finder LED helps clinicians quickly identify which transducer on the patient corresponds to which trace on the monitor — useful when multiple CL transducers are in use for twins or during a shift change. The internal Lithium-Ion battery powers the device wirelessly throughout labor; charge status is reported to the fetal monitor, and low-battery, out-of-battery, loss-of-radio, and malfunction alarms are all built into the Avalon CL system so clinicians are alerted before the trace is interrupted.

Patient safety and construction

The 866075 is a Type CF applied part, meaning its patient connection is rated for direct cardiac application and is defibrillation-resistant — important given the MECG and DECG use cases on the auxiliary connector. The housing is latex-free and sealed at the factory. The Toco sensor includes a pressure-equalization ventilation membrane that requires periodic inspection per the Avalon CL maintenance schedule; IPR Medical includes this check in our standard 866075 service. The transducer is not user-serviceable for battery replacement, which requires the dedicated Philips CL transducer battery replacement tool used by authorized technicians.
