What Is a Toco Transducer?

A tocodynamometer, commonly called a toco, is an external uterine activity sensor used during labor and delivery to detect, time, and record uterine contractions. Strapped to the maternal abdomen with a monitoring belt, the toco transducer responds to changes in abdominal wall tension caused by uterine contractions, transmitting data to the fetal monitor to display contraction frequency, duration, and relative intensity in real time. It is one of two transducers used in standard external fetal monitoring — the other being an ultrasound transducer that tracks fetal heart rate.

The GE Corometrics Nautilus toco is available in three configurations: knob (button) only, wings (loop) only, and this combo version that incorporates both attachment styles on a single modified top cover. With the combo unit, clinical staff can choose on the fly whether to use the button or the loop to secure the transducer to the monitoring belt — no separate SKU required, no searching for the “right” version when it is time to replace a worn unit. Departments that currently stock both the 2264HAX and 2264LAX separately can simplify their inventory by standardizing on this single combo configuration. The transducer housing, cable, connector, and all clinical specifications are otherwise identical to the single-style variants.

Design and Construction

The Nautilus toco’s flat, low-profile housing is designed to minimize abdominal pressure and patient discomfort during extended monitoring sessions in labor and delivery. The watertight construction allows for thorough surface disinfection between patients and supports in-water monitoring use where indicated. The transducer connects to the fetal monitor via a 10 ft gray cable with a round, keyed 12-pin distal connector. It ships individually bagged, non-sterile, and ready for immediate clinical use.

This compatible toco transducer is designed for use with GE Healthcare Corometrics fetal monitors that accept a round, keyed 12-pin connector. Compatible models include the 116, 118, 120, 128, 129, 130, 145, 150, 151, 155, 170, 171, 172, 173, 174, 250, 250cx, 256cx, 259, 259cx, and 340 series.
