You can download the Kangaroo ePump Operating Manual (Covidien, Manual No. SMF0211-079, REV 03/2012) and Cardinal Health’s two-page Quick Reference Guide for loading and rinsing below. We could not find a newer edition of the Operating Manual published on Cardinal Health’s website. The ePump is a rotary peristaltic enteral feed and flush pump that delivers 1 to 400 mL/hr in 1 mL steps with ±10% accuracy (or 0.5 mL/hr, whichever is larger), runs at least 15 hours on its NiMH battery at 100 mL/hr, and uses only Kangaroo ePump Feed-Only or Feed & Flush sets.
Whether you are training staff, checking an alarm at the bedside or setting up a biomed PM program, the right Kangaroo ePump document saves time. This guide collects the documents we host, explains which one you need, and pulls out the specifications and reference details people ask us about most.

Which Kangaroo ePump Document Do You Need?
The Operating Manual does not print a software version on its cover, so record the SW version from your pump’s BioTech screen (see below) and ask Cardinal Health whether a different edition applies to your pumps. Here is how the documents fit together:
| Document | Who uses it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Operating Manual (SMF0211-079, REV 03/2012) | Clinicians, educators, biomed | The full reference for programming, alarms, cleaning, performance testing and specifications. Published by Covidien before the Kangaroo line moved to Cardinal Health. |
| Quick Reference Guide (loading and rinsing) | Clinicians and home caregivers | Summary only; not a substitute for the full manual. |
| Performance test procedure and certificate | Trained biomedical technicians | The manual says the full test procedure and certificate are on the User Manual CD as a separate document. Not hosted here; the flow-rate accuracy check is summarized below. |
| Set instructions for use | Clinicians | Each Kangaroo ePump set has its own labeling; follow it along with the pump manual. |
Checking recalls or end-of-life dates? Our Kangaroo ePump recalls and safety notices guide covers the FDA-listed set recalls and Cardinal Health’s discontinuation timeline.

Pump Sets and Set Identification
The manual is direct: use only Kangaroo ePump sets, because the pump is not compatible with other pump sets. The pump reads the set type through MISTIC (Magnetic Intelligent Set Type Identification Connector), the black ring retainer, so the screen matches a Feed-Only or Feed & Flush set. Key points from the manual and Quick Reference Guide:
- Valve into the left pocket with the finger tab aligned to the locating rib, tubing wrapped counterclockwise around the rotor without overstretching, retainer into the right pocket, then close the blue door. The status line should read SET LOADED.
- Hang the bottom of the bag 18 in (46 cm) above the top of the pump for rated accuracy.
- With a Feed & Flush set, prime the flush line first, then the feed line.
- Do not reuse sets after 24 hours of use; the pump shows a blinking indicator once a set has run 24 hours.
- To unload, power the pump off and wait 10 seconds before removing the set.
- Never rotate the valve stem by hand.
Important: Cardinal Health’s June 2024 end-of-life letter said it anticipated that supply of ePump feeding sets and accessories would end June 30, 2025. See our recalls and safety notices guide for the full timeline.
Finding the Software Version: The BioTech Screen
- Press POWER to start the pump.
- Press and hold the top menu button while the start-up sequence runs (the kangaroo icon hops across the screen). You must still be holding it when the sequence ends.
- Read SN (serial number), SW (software version), FLASH (flash data version) and CERT INTV (power-ons since certification).
- Press DONE to exit. To return, power down and repeat.
The BioTech screen is also where biomed sets Lock Settings, EZMODE and Communication. Selecting CLEAR SETTINGS at power-up does not clear BioTech options such as EZMODE and Lock Settings.
Quick Reference from the Manual
| Topic | What the manual says |
|---|---|
| Preventive maintenance | Recommended service interval of at least once per year; run the performance evaluation yearly or whenever performance is suspect. |
| Flow-rate accuracy check | On AC power with a new Feed-Only set and water, bag 18 in above the pump, run 15 minutes, then collect for 30 minutes. Expected: 33.7 to 41.3 mL at 75 mL/hr; 67.5 to 82.5 mL at 150 mL/hr. |
| Battery | Connect the battery before first use. Eight hours of charging fully recharges the pack; a replacement pack ships partially charged and should be charged 6 hours before use off AC power. |
| Storage | For storage longer than nine months, disconnect the battery; it may need several charge and discharge cycles to restore capacity. |
| BATTERY LOW | About 15 minutes of battery life remain; plug in the AC adapter. |
| SYSTEM ERROR | Power down and back on to try to clear it; if it persists, put a different pump into service and report the error number. |
| Cleaning | Disconnect AC power. Mild detergent for cleaning; 10% hypochlorite, isopropyl alcohol or ammonium chloride-based solutions for disinfection, on a damp (not wet) cloth. Do not immerse. Keep fluid out of the vents under the handle. Avoid Spray Nine, pHisoHex, Hibiclens, Vesta Syde and the other ingredients the manual lists. |
| Spills | After leakage into the pump, wetting of the AC adapter or a large formula spill, do not use the pump until it has been cleaned and serviced. |
| Serial port | For use only with the approved Communication Cable, part number 382499. |
For what these alarms usually mean in practice, see our Kangaroo ePump common problems and repair guide.
User-Replaceable Parts
The manual says the main housing has no user-serviceable parts and opening it voids the warranty. It lists these customer-replaceable parts:
| Part | Part number |
|---|---|
| Main door (blue transparent door) | F31877WT |
| Battery pack | 1041411 (manual); listed as 1054715 in Cardinal Health’s 2024 product list |
| Battery door (with screw) | F31878WT |
| AC power adapter | 382491 |
| Pole clamp | 382492 |
| Electrical plugs (set of 4) | 382493 |

Kangaroo ePump Manual FAQ
Where can I download the Kangaroo ePump operating manual?
You can download the Covidien Kangaroo ePump Operating Manual (Manual No. SMF0211-079, REV 03/2012) and Cardinal Health’s Quick Reference Guide for loading and rinsing from this page.
How do I find the software version on a Kangaroo ePump?
Power the pump on and hold the top menu button until the start-up sequence ends. The BioTech screen shows the serial number, software version (SW), flash version (FLASH) and the number of power-ons since certification.
What is the flow rate range of the Kangaroo ePump?
1 to 400 mL/hr in 1 mL increments, with ±10% or 0.5 mL/hr accuracy, whichever is larger, under the manual’s test conditions. BOLUS MAX delivers boluses at 999 mL/hr, and flushes run at 1960 mL/hr.
How long does the Kangaroo ePump battery last?
The Operating Manual specifies at least 15 hours at 100 mL/hr from a new, fully charged NiMH pack (its General Startup section says 15 hours at 125 mL/hr). Eight hours of charging fully recharges it.
Can I use other feeding sets on a Kangaroo ePump?
No. The manual says to use only Kangaroo ePump sets and that the pump is not compatible with other pump sets. Cardinal Health’s 2024 end-of-life letter said it anticipated ePump set supply would end June 30, 2025.
How do I check Kangaroo ePump flow-rate accuracy?
On AC power, load a new Feed-Only set with water, hang the bag 18 in above the pump, run for 15 minutes, then collect for exactly 30 minutes. The volume should be half the hourly rate within ±10% or 0.5 mL, for example 33.7 to 41.3 mL at 75 mL/hr.
How often does a Kangaroo ePump need maintenance?
The manual recommends a service interval of at least once per year, plus performance testing any time the pump is suspected of not performing properly.
