Quick answer

ICU Medical, which now owns Smiths Medical, hosts the current Medfusion 4000 Operator’s Manual for software V1.6, and you can download the earlier V1.1 manual, the Quick Reference Card and the original product brochure below. Always match the manual to the software version shown on your pump’s start-up screen. The Medfusion 4000 accepts 1 to 60 mL syringes, delivers 0.01 to 1130 mL/hr with ±2% nominal accuracy, runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and connects to PharmGuard Server over wired Ethernet or 802.11b/g wireless.

Whether you are training new staff, checking an alarm at the bedside or setting up a biomed PM program, the right Medfusion 4000 document saves time. This guide collects the documents we host, explains which one you need, and pulls out the specifications and reference details people ask us about most.

The pump only accepts syringe models defined in its configuration. The Operator’s Manual lists these Medfusion Standard Syringes, with more available through the PharmGuard Supported Syringes (PSS) Series 2:

  • BD: 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60 mL Luer-Lok, plus a 1 mL slip tip (tuberculin) syringe
  • Monoject (Covidien): 3, 6, 12, 20, 35 and 60 mL Luer lock, plus a 1 mL slip tip (tuberculin) syringe. Cardinal Health-branded Monoject syringes are not qualified for this pump.
  • Terumo: 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60 mL Luer lock, plus a 1 mL slip tip (tuberculin) syringe
  • B. Braun Omnifix: 5, 10, 20 and 50 mL Luer lock
  • B. Braun Perfusor: 20 and 50 mL Luer lock

Always confirm that the brand and size the pump displays match the syringe you loaded. Important: in February 2024, Smiths Medical (now part of ICU Medical) told users not to use Cardinal Health-branded Monoject syringes on Medfusion 3500 and 4000 pumps; see our recall and software versions guide.

Medfusion 4000 Manual FAQ

Where can I download the Medfusion 4000 operator’s manual?

ICU Medical publishes the current V1.6 Operator’s Manual on its website, linked above. You can also download the earlier V1.1 manual, the Quick Reference Card and the product brochure from this page.

How do I find the software version on a Medfusion 4000?

The software version is displayed on the start-up screen when you turn the pump on. The manual instructs users to confirm that it matches the version on the manual’s front page.

What syringe sizes does the Medfusion 4000 accept?

The Medfusion 4000 accepts 1 to 60 mL syringes. Only syringe models defined in the pump’s configuration can be used, including the Medfusion Standard Syringes and PharmGuard Supported Syringes.

What is the flow rate range of the Medfusion 4000?

0.01 to 1130 mL/hr, with nominal ±2% delivery accuracy plus syringe accuracy.

What is the battery run time of a Medfusion 4000?

The current V1.6 manual specifies at least 7 hours at 5 mL/hr with a 60 mL syringe while the pump is communicating on the network; the earlier V1.1 manual listed about 10 hours typical. The battery is rated for 400 charge cycles or two years, whichever comes first.

Is the Medfusion 4000 MR Conditional?

Yes. The current V1.6 Operator’s Manual labels it MR Conditional when it is secured to a non-moveable object where the magnetic fringe field does not exceed 150 gauss (the older V1.1 manual also specified shielded 1.5 Tesla magnets). Follow your pump’s labeling and your facility’s MRI safety policy.

Where can I get the Medfusion 4000 Technical Service Manual?

The Medfusion Model 4000 Series Technical Service Manual (cited in the operator’s manual as catalog number 67-2452-51; the current 2023 edition is P/N 10014940-009) is available from ICU Medical technical service for trained biomedical technicians. If you need a pump serviced instead, request a free shipping label and we will evaluate it.

Does the Medfusion 4000 need annual maintenance?
