Quick answer

You can download the Sigma Spectrum Operator’s Manual for pump operating software v6.05 (Manual 41018, Revision D) and a Baxter Sigma Spectrum Infusion System brochure below. Baxter provides current service documentation, including manuals for V8 pumps, through its Technical Service Portal. Always match the manual to the software version on your pump’s start-up screen: V6 software begins with 6 and V8 software begins with 8. Per the v6.05 manual, the Spectrum delivers 0.5 to 999 mL/hr with ±5% accuracy from 2 to 800 mL/hr on compatible Baxter or Hospira sets, uses dual-beam ultrasonic air-in-line detection, offers Low, Medium and High downstream occlusion settings, and runs about 8 hours at 125 mL/hr on the standard lithium-ion battery.

Whether you are training staff, checking an alarm or setting up a biomed PM program, the right Sigma Spectrum document saves time. This guide collects the documents we host, explains which one you need, and pulls out the specifications people ask us about most.

Which Sigma Spectrum Manual Do You Need?

Start with the platform and software version. Baxter’s recall notices say V6 software begins with 6 and V8 software begins with 8, and that the version appears on the start-up screen. On a V6, you can also go to the Pump Information screen and press the sw info soft key; on a V8, from the Select Care Area screen press the options menu soft key, then select User Options, View Information and Pump Information (press OK after each) to open the Pump Info screen. Spectrum IQ is a different pump with its own manuals; see our Spectrum IQ page.

The manual lists the intended routes as intravenous, arterial, subcutaneous, intrathecal, epidural or irrigation of fluid space; the 2016 brochure lists the same routes without intrathecal. Follow the labeling for your pump.

Compatible IV Sets

The Spectrum uses standard gravity IV sets with a slide clamp, which opens the door and provides set-based anti-free-flow protection. Each pump is calibrated for one tubing type, either Baxter “S” IV set tubing or Hospira 0.100″ I.D. series tubing. A label on top of the pump, and the Tube type line on the Pump Information screen, show which. The manual warns that using another brand or type of tubing could produce unsafe inaccuracies.

  • Baxter sets: for pumps calibrated for Baxter “S” tubing; the manual gives a partial list and refers to DOC 11182 for the full list.
  • Hospira sets: for pumps calibrated for Hospira tubing; sets must have a green slide clamp or a yellow keyed slide clamp on the pumping section (full list in DOC 11181). Yellow keyed slide clamp sets require Spectrum software 4.02.06 or higher.
  • SIGMA sets (Hospira-calibrated pumps only): nitroglycerin/lipid set (Cat. No. 99021) and Y-type blood set (Cat. No. 99031). The manual lists both with Hospira pump calibration, so do not use them on a pump calibrated for Baxter “S” tubing.

Quick Reference From the Manual

TopicWhat the manual says
Preventive maintenanceTest for proper performance annually and whenever damage from drops, fluid intrusion or other causes is suspected; see the Service Manual. The pump can show a Due for inspection alert for PM and/or network certification.
Set loadingSlide clamp into the keyhole (loading point #1), tubing into loading points #2, #3 and #4; loaded when the screen shows three green bars and check marks for all four points.
Battery warningsLOW BATTERY: at least 30 minutes of run time left. VERY LOW BATTERY: at least 15 minutes. BATTERY DEPLETED: the pump stops and shuts off in 3 minutes if not plugged in. An unplugged pump keeps discharging slowly even when off.
System errorsCycle power, or power off, disconnect the battery, reconnect it several seconds later and press ON. If the fault does not clear, return the pump for service.
Downstream pressureUse Medium or High above 500 mL/hr to avoid nuisance alarms from set pulsation; use Low below 100 mL/hr with sets longer than 48 inches from the pump to the patient connection.
CleaningClean and disinfect for each patient use per facility protocol. Wipe on minimal cleaner, never spray; no autoclave or ETO; no alcohol on the battery. The 2011 manual’s cleaner list has been superseded: after its 2020 cleaning correction, Baxter directs users to its current list of approved cleaning agents (spectrumIQ.com/resources.html) and the current Operator’s Manual.
AC adaptorAvoid drops; pull straight out by the protector handle, never by the cord. The green LED and the plug symbol on the display confirm power.

In 2020, Baxter updated the Spectrum instructions for use with a safety communication on cleaning practices and asked facilities to inspect rear case pins and battery contacts for residue and corrosion. Ask Baxter for its current list of approved cleaning agents. For what alarms usually mean in practice, see our Sigma Spectrum common problems guide.

Sigma Spectrum Manual FAQ

Where can I download the Sigma Spectrum operator’s manual?

You can download the Operator’s Manual for pump software v6.05 (Manual 41018, Revision D) from this page. Baxter provides current manuals, including V8 editions, through its Technical Service Portal at service.baxter.com, which requires a Baxter account.

How do I tell a Sigma Spectrum V6 from a V8?

Check the software version on the start-up screen: V6 software begins with 6 and V8 software begins with 8. The product code on the bottom of the pump also helps: V6 pumps typically carry 35700BAX or 35700ABB (FDA records also list variants such as 35700BAXR), and V8 pumps 35700BAX2. The software version is the deciding check.

Does the v6.05 manual cover the Sigma Spectrum V8?

No. The v6.05 manual is written for V6 pumps on software v6.05 with MDL Editor v6.2.4. V8 pumps run version 8 software and a Version 8 drug library, so use the V8 Operator’s Manual from Baxter.

What is the flow rate range of the Sigma Spectrum?

Per the v6.05 manual, 0.5 to 999 mL/hr, with ±5% accuracy from 2.0 to 800 mL/hr on compatible Baxter or Hospira standard sets, and ±0.1 mL/hr below 2.0 mL/hr.

How long does the Sigma Spectrum battery last?

The v6.05 manual rates the standard lithium-ion battery (P/N 35724) at 8 hours at 125 mL/hr at the highest backlight setting, and the wireless battery modules (P/N 35083 and 35162) at 4 hours. Recharge takes 12 hours for the standard battery and 16 hours for the wireless modules.

What IV sets does the Sigma Spectrum use?

Standard gravity IV sets with a slide clamp. Each pump is calibrated for either Baxter “S” tubing or Hospira 0.100″ I.D. tubing, shown on a label on top of the pump and on the Pump Information screen. Use only compatible sets of that type.

Where can I get the Sigma Spectrum Service Manual?

The v6.05 Operator’s Manual cites the Service Manual as P/N 41019. Baxter’s Technical Service Portal is its library of current service documents. If you need a pump serviced instead, request a free shipping label and we will evaluate it.

Does the Sigma Spectrum need annual maintenance?

Yes. The Operator’s Manual cautions that pumps should be tested for proper performance annually and whenever damage from drops, fluid intrusion or other causes is suspected.
