Overview

The Philips IntelliVue M3001A (Option A01C18) is the most fully featured single-module configuration available in the M3001A product family. The C18 designation combines the two extended measurement packages into one: the 12-lead ECG capability of the C12 option and the invasive pressure/temperature channel of the C06 option. The result is a module capable of acquiring 3-, 5-, and 12-lead ECG — including EASI-derived 12-lead ECG using only 5 electrodes — full arrhythmia and ST analysis, QT/QTc monitoring, impedance respiration, Philips FAST SpO2, oscillometric NBP, and either invasive blood pressure or temperature, all within a single plug-and-play module that docks directly to any compatible IntelliVue host monitor. The A01C18 is the configuration of choice for cardiovascular ICUs, cardiac catheterization labs, ORs, and high-acuity transport environments where diagnostic-quality 12-lead ECG capture and hemodynamic or temperature monitoring are required alongside the full core vital signs package. As with all M3001A configurations, patient demographics, up to eight hours of trend data at one-minute resolution, and active measurement settings are stored in the module itself, traveling with the patient between IntelliVue host monitors and persisting for up to six hours while the module is disconnected.

12-Lead ECG — Conventional Capture and EASI

The C18 option unlocks conventional 12-lead ECG capability in the M3001A, making the A01C18 suitable for diagnostic ECG recording at the bedside alongside continuous monitoring. When used with a 10-electrode lead set connected to a compatible IntelliVue host monitor, the module provides diagnostic signal quality as defined in the ANSI/AAMI EC11-1991 standard. This is the same 12-lead capture quality used for formal diagnostic ECG interpretation, making the A01C18 appropriate for cardiac monitoring environments where documented 12-lead ECGs are part of the clinical protocol. When connected to the IntelliVue Information Center iX, 12-lead ECG data can be transmitted to and stored in a compatible ECG management system, and previously acquired ECGs can be retrieved at the bedside. The A01C18 also supports EASI ECG monitoring, which derives 12-lead ECG data using only 5 electrodes in the EASI placement configuration rather than the standard 10. EASI reduces the complexity of electrode setup, decreases the number of lead wires attached to the patient, and minimizes interference with clinical procedures — making it particularly useful in post-operative and transport environments where full 10-electrode setups are impractical. In addition, up to 12-lead ST segment analysis with alarms is available at the bedside, and QT/QTc interval monitoring tracks the measured QT interval alongside a heart-rate corrected QTc value and a QTc variation indicator referenced against a stored baseline.

The C18 Channel — Invasive Pressure or Temperature

The C18 option includes the same combined invasive pressure and temperature connector found in the C06 configuration. This single connector accepts either an invasive pressure transducer (colored red) or a temperature probe (colored brown), enabling the module to deliver arterial line pressure waveforms and numerics — systolic, diastolic, and mean — or continuous temperature monitoring depending on which device is connected. A critical operational detail confirmed in the Philips OEM service documentation is that invasive pressure and temperature cannot be used simultaneously on this connector — this constraint applies to both C06 and C18 configurations. If simultaneous pressure and temperature monitoring is required, an MMS extension module such as the M3012A or M3015A must be added to provide the additional channel. For the large majority of clinical situations in which either an arterial line or a temperature probe is active at a given time — but not both — the A01C18’s single C18 connector fully meets the need. The invasive pressure channel supports zeroing via a dedicated button on the module and is compatible with standard Philips-approved invasive pressure transducer kits and adapter cables for BD, Utah, and B. Braun connector styles.

Philips FAST SpO2 and NBP

The Philips FAST SpO2 technology in the A01C18 provides SpO2 saturation, pulse rate, and a real-time plethysmogram waveform. FAST SpO2 is compatible with the full range of Nellcor OxiMax sensors, including the MAX-FAST forehead sensor and non-adhesive SoftCare sensors, connecting directly to the module’s SpO2 port via the standard D-Connect interface without an adapter cable. Non-invasive blood pressure measurement uses the oscillometric method with adult, pediatric, and neonatal modes. Manual, automatic, and stat NBP modes are available through the host IntelliVue monitor’s interface, with each result automatically entered into the module’s trend record. The NBP pneumatic assembly requires a calibration performance check once every two years per OEM service documentation.

A01C18 vs. A01C06 and A01C12 — Understanding the Option Structure

The three C-option suffixes in the M3001A family represent distinct measurement additions to the A01 standard package. The C06 option adds the invasive pressure/temperature channel only — no 12-lead ECG. The C12 option adds conventional 12-lead ECG capability only — no invasive pressure or temperature. The C18 option combines both: 12-lead ECG and the invasive pressure/temperature channel. For facilities that require both 12-lead ECG capability and at least one hemodynamic or temperature measurement in a single MMS module, the A01C18 is the only configuration that delivers both without requiring a separate module or extension. For facilities that need only one of those additions, the A01C06 or A01C12 is the more appropriate and typically less costly selection. The invasive pressure/temperature constraint — that pressure and temperature cannot be used simultaneously on the module’s single connector — applies equally to the A01C06 and A01C18. The 12-lead ECG capability in the A01C18 is operationally identical to what is available in the A01C12.

Patient Data Portability and Trend Storage

The M3001A A01C18 stores its complete patient record internally. Up to eight hours of numeric trend data at one-minute resolution — spanning ECG-derived values, SpO2, respiration, NBP, and invasive pressure or temperature — is held within the module rather than on the host monitor. Patient demographic information, active measurement settings, and NBP calibration data are also resident in the module. When the A01C18 docks to a new IntelliVue host, this complete record uploads automatically without manual re-entry. Invasive pressure calibration and zeroing settings are preserved in the module, so the pressure channel does not need to be reconfigured when the patient is reconnected at a new bedside monitor. The module retains the full patient record for up to six hours while disconnected, supporting transport between the ICU and OR, imaging, or procedure areas without data loss. The A01C18’s 12-lead ECG capability is also preserved in the module’s settings, meaning the lead configuration and ECG display preferences travel with the patient just as all other measurement settings do.

MMS Extensions and Simultaneous Pressure and Temperature

For facilities that need simultaneous invasive pressure and temperature monitoring alongside the A01C18’s 12-lead ECG capability, MMS extension modules can supplement the single C18 connector. The M3012A Measurement Server Extension adds an additional pressure and temperature channel, enabling both the C18 connector on the M3001A and the extension’s channels to be used concurrently — in practice allowing one channel for invasive pressure and one for temperature at the same time. The M3015A extension adds sidestream CO2 capnography and an additional pressure/temperature channel. The M3016A adds mainstream CO2. These extensions attach physically to the M3001A and inherit power and network connectivity from the host monitor through the module, requiring no separate power supplies or additional MSL cables.

Host Monitor Connectivity and System Integration

The M3001A A01C18 connects to compatible IntelliVue host monitors in either the direct-dock configuration — locking to the rear of the host monitor without cables — or the remote configuration via MSL cable for placement in the patient vicinity. Once connected, all monitoring, alarm, and configuration functions are managed through the host monitor’s interface. The A01C18 is compatible with the full IntelliVue MP-series platform (MP20 through MP90), the MX-series monitors, and the M3046A (M/M4 series) running Release E or higher software. When the host monitor is networked to the IntelliVue Information Center, all measurement data from the A01C18 — including 12-lead ECG captures, invasive pressure waveforms, and temperature — flows transparently for central monitoring, trend archiving, ECG storage, and clinical reporting.
