In current BD documentation, the Alaris 8100 pump module’s instructions are a chapter of the BD Alaris System User Manual for the PC unit (Model 8015), matched to the PC unit’s software version. Older systems use the PC unit Model 8000. Below you can download the January 2020 edition (PC unit software 12.1), the December 2016 edition (software 9.19) and the original 2004 Pump Module 8100 Series Directions for Use, plus BD’s 2020 cleaning and inspection addendum. Newer editions (v12.3.x and v12.4) come from BD. The 8100 delivers 0.1 to 999 mL/h with ±5% rate accuracy from 1 to 999 mL/h, and runs on power from the PC unit.
Whether you are training new staff, chasing an alarm at the bedside or setting up a biomed PM program, the right Alaris document saves time. This guide collects the documents we host, explains which one you need, and pulls out the 8100 specifications and reference details people ask us about most.

Which Alaris 8100 Manual Do You Need?
Because the PC unit runs the system, the right manual is the one that matches the PC unit’s software, together with the module chapter inside it. Check the versions on the PC unit itself (OPTIONS, PAGE DOWN, Software Versions). Here is how the documents fit together:
| Document | Who uses it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BD Alaris System User Manual (by PC unit software version) | Clinicians, educators, biomed | We host the 2020 (v12.1) and 2016 (v9.19) editions. FDA’s January 2025 labeling correction names later editions for v12.3.1 (P00000455), v12.3.2 (P00000827) and v12.4 (P00000828), which BD said it would correct; request the current edition for your software from BD. |
| Pump Module 8100 Series Directions for Use (2004) | Facilities with Medley-era systems, and anyone checking original specifications | Superseded for current software; useful for older modules and for comparing specifications. |
| Technical Service Manual for the PC Unit Model 8015 and Pump Module Model 8100 | Qualified service personnel | Routine service schedules, interconnect diagrams, parts lists and test procedures. Available from BD; not hosted here. |
| System maintenance software and its user manual | Biomed | Used for check-in, preventive maintenance tests, calibration checks and calibration. The 2004 directions cite Medley Maintenance Software Model 8970C or later. |
| Alaris Pump Module Set Compatibility Card | Clinicians, materials management | Lists the administration sets approved for the 8100. |

Administration Sets
The 8100 works only with dedicated sets. The 2020 manual says to use only BD Alaris Pump Infusion administration sets listed on the Alaris Pump Module Set Compatibility Card (the 2004 directions name Medley System/Gemini series sets), and warns that any other set can cause inaccurate delivery. A few points from the manuals:
- Safety clamp fitment: every primary set has a safety clamp (called the Flo-Stop device in the 2004 directions) that closes automatically when the set is removed, to prevent free flow.
- Priming: hang the container 20 inches above the module, fill the drip chamber two-thirds full and prime slowly with the roller clamp.
- Loading: insert the upper fitment before the safety clamp fitment, keep the tubing untwisted and unstretched, and push it to the back of the air-in-line detector with a fingertip.
- SmartSite needle-free valve: swab with 70% isopropyl alcohol before every access; replace every 96 hours or 100 activations, or every 24 hours for blood, blood products or lipid emulsions (2020 manual).
Important: several set lots, and the module’s performance with certain sets, have been the subject of BD recalls, most recently in 2025 and 2026. Check FDA’s recall database and BD’s current performance data before choosing sets for low-rate or critical infusions.
Quick Reference from the Manual
| Topic | What the manual says |
|---|---|
| Software versions | OPTIONS, PAGE DOWN, Software Versions, then View for the PC unit or a module. |
| Serial numbers | OPTIONS, PAGE DOWN, Serial Numbers shows the PC unit and every attached module. |
| Maintenance due | If PM Reminder is enabled, Maintenance Reminder appears at power-up; notify facility personnel and remove the module that is due. OPTIONS, PAGE DOWN twice, Maintenance Due shows the dates. |
| Before placing in use | Perform the check-in procedure with the system maintenance software and load the hospital-defined data set. |
| Inspection each use | Exterior surfaces, IUI connectors, keypad, pole clamp and power cord. Do not use a device with cracked, contaminated or corroded IUI connectors. |
| Cleaning | Turn off and unplug first. Do not spray fluids onto the device or into IUI connectors; no autoclave, EtO, immersion or compressed air. Use only 70% isopropyl alcohol on the IUI connectors, with a dedicated brush, and let them dry fully before attaching modules. |
| Inspection at cleaning | Open each pump module door and inspect the platen and hinge for cracks; send damaged devices to biomedical engineering. |
| Battery and storage | Keep the PC unit plugged in during storage; charge 16 hours after depletion; the battery is a backup to AC power. |
| Channel Error | Press CONFIRM, then replace the affected module with an operable one; service by qualified personnel is required. |
| Transferring PC units | Clear the historical log, which stores ePHI, when a PC unit leaves your network, per Service Bulletin 597A. |
