What Is the M1972A Compatible 3-Lead One-Piece ECG Cable?

The IPR Medical EC-3005RS-A is a compatible aftermarket (not OEM) 3-lead one-piece ECG cable that replaces OEM part M1972A. Its three limb leads, each finished with a snap connector for snap-style electrodes, are integrated into the cable as a single reusable piece rather than supplied as a separate leadwire set. The cable is defib-proof, uses AHA designation, and is intended for ECG monitoring.

Compatible Monitor Models

Original-equipment models make up the bulk of the compatibility list for OEM part M1972A, and each of them is shown by model number in the Compatible Monitor Models table on the Specifications tab. A handful of other manufacturers are represented too: select Welch Allyn models (the 242 and the Propaq Encore 206EL), select Solaris models (the NT3C, NT3E, and NT3F), select Newtech, Nihon Kohden, and Konsung models, and the Smiths Medical / BCI SurgiVet V9200. A quick look at that table will tell you whether your monitor is covered.

Design and Construction

Snap electrode ends sit at the tip of each of the three leads on the EC-3005RS-A. With AHA designation, the right arm lead is white, the left arm lead black, and the left leg lead red. The specified length is 8.2 ft + 3.0 ft (2.5 m + 0.9 m). Besides being defib-proof, the cable is reusable and ships one per bag; clean it between patients per facility protocol and check the snaps for wear before each use.

When to Replace Your 3-Lead One-Piece ECG Cable

Snaps that have loosened and no longer seat firmly on the electrode stud are a common reason to retire this cable. Look also for a cracked or kinked jacket on the main cable or any lead, bent pins at the monitor connector, and a connector housing that is chipped or loose. On the monitor, a cable near the end of its service life tends to show up as lead-off alerts that persist after the electrodes are changed, a wandering baseline, or a trace that cuts out when the cable is moved. Test with a known-good cable to rule out the monitor.
