Baxter AS40A

$995.00

The Baxter Auto Syringe AS40A is a compact, field-configurable syringe infusion pump built for accurate continuous and intermittent drug delivery across a wide range of clinical applications — from pain management and anesthesia to chemotherapy and critical care. Weighing just 2.75 lbs, it is purpose-built for portability without sacrificing precision.

The AS40A accepts standard disposable syringes from 1 mL to 60 mL across Becton Dickinson, Monoject, and Terumo, with flow rates spanning 0.01 ml/h up to 360 ml/h and a flow accuracy rating of ±3% (not including syringe tolerance). The self-prompting multi-field LCD walks operators through programming step by step, and the field-configurable design allows each facility to tailor syringe brand recognition, available infusion modes, maximum rate ceiling, occlusion sensitivity, and keypad auto-lock to their specific clinical environment.

Please note: Baxter has ended manufacturer support for the AS40A. IPR Medical buys, sells, and repairs the Baxter AS40A and stocks replacement parts to keep these pumps performing reliably in the field. Contact us at 855-477-8866 or cs@iprmed.com.

Looking for a newer alternative? Consider upgrading to the Baxter AS50 — the direct next-generation successor sharing the same compact form factor and syringe compatibility, with an extended flow rate ceiling of 438 ml/h and an upgraded rechargeable battery — or the Medfusion 3500 Version 6, a modern syringe pump with a built-in drug library options and full third-party service support.

Overview

The Baxter Auto Syringe AS40A is a compact, field-configurable syringe infusion pump designed to meet the precise fluid and drug delivery demands of clinical environments including anesthesia, critical care, pain management, chemotherapy, and neonatal or pediatric therapy. It supports continuous and intermittent infusion via intravenous, intra-arterial, epidural, and subcutaneous routes, accepting standard disposable syringes from 1 mL to 60 mL across Becton Dickinson, Monoject, and Terumo brands. At approximately 2.75 lbs with a built-in pole clamp and lanyard loop, the AS40A was engineered for flexible deployment at the bedside or on an IV pole — making it a workhorse pump across a wide range of acute care settings.

Infusion Modes and Programming

The AS40A supports continuous infusion as well as intermittent delivery of one or more equal timed doses, pre-programmable bolus operation, and dose titration without interruption of fluid flow. Programming is guided by a self-prompting multi-field LCD that walks the clinician through each field in sequence — syringe size and manufacturer, infusion rate, concentration, and volume limit — reducing the potential for entry errors. The pump programs in ml/h, ml/min, units/h, units/min, mUnits/h, mUnits/min, mg/h, mg/min, mcg/h, and mcg/min, with an optional on-board drug library that stores drug-specific infusion parameters in memory for faster, safer setup. A nine-LED status array provides at-a-glance infusion status throughout the therapy.

Field Configuration and Safety Features

One of the AS40A’s defining strengths is its field-configurable architecture, which allows biomedical technicians to tailor the pump’s behavior to the institution’s clinical protocols. Configurable options include available syringe brands and sizes, automatic syringe size recognition, selectable infusion modes, maximum rate ceiling, variable occlusion pressure sensitivity, and keypad auto-lock. This flexibility makes the AS40A adaptable across different care settings within the same facility. The comprehensive alarm system covers line occlusion, syringe empty, volume limit reached, near-empty warning, low battery, dose due and dose complete notifications, and a suite of failsafe alarms including bad battery, power fault, and system error — ensuring that any interruption to therapy is immediately flagged.

Power and Portability

The AS40A operates on its internal nickel-cadmium rechargeable battery pack, delivering approximately 12 hours of runtime at 2 ml/h using a 60 mL syringe after a full 16-hour charge, or can be operated continuously while the battery charger is connected to AC power (105–125V, 60 Hz). The pump’s high-impact plastic housing with removable elastomeric bumpers and water-resistant construction provides durability for demanding clinical environments. The built-in pole clamp and lanyard loop allow flexible IV pole mounting, while the flat base supports tabletop use. An optional RS-232 serial port (9-pin) enables remote computer monitoring and control for facilities utilizing centralized infusion management systems.

FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins

The FDA has recorded a Class 2 device recall for the Baxter Auto Syringe AS40 and AS40A Infusion Pumps series (FDA recall ID 44130). A Class 2 recall designation indicates that use of the affected device may cause temporary or reversible adverse health consequences, or that the probability of serious harm is remote. Because the AS40A is a legacy device for which Baxter has ended manufacturer service, facilities currently operating AS40A pumps should verify the recall status and any recommended corrective actions directly through the FDA’s official databases. IPR Medical strongly recommends that all facilities check for the most current information using the FDA resources listed below.

Important safety note: Facilities using the Baxter AS40A should verify the current recall status and any required actions against the FDA Medical Device Recalls Database. Because Baxter has ended manufacturer service for this model, IPR Medical can assist with pump inspection, repair, and evaluation. Contact us at 855-477-8866 or cs@iprmed.com.

FDA official resources for current correction and recall information:

Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.

Considering an Upgrade?

Because Baxter has ended manufacturer support for the AS40A, some facilities may prefer to transition to a currently supported platform. The Baxter AS50 is the direct next-generation successor — sharing the same compact form factor, syringe compatibility, and intuitive keypad interface, while offering an extended flow rate ceiling of 438 ml/h and an upgraded rechargeable battery. For facilities seeking a more modern platform with a optional built-in drug libraries, and pharmguard safety software, the Medfusion 3500 Version 6 is a strong alternative. IPR Medical stocks, sells, and supports both platforms.
