Overview

The 3M Bair Hugger Model 775 Warming Unit is a forced-air temperature management device used to prevent and treat perioperative hypothermia and to provide thermal comfort across pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-anesthesia care settings. The unit draws filtered room air, heats it to one of three patient-warming setpoints (plus an ambient option), and delivers it through a sensor-tipped hose into a compatible Bair Hugger warming blanket, warming gown, or the Bair Hugger 241 Blood/Fluid Warming Set. The 775 supersedes earlier Bair Hugger units (including the 505 and 750) and remains one of the most widely deployed forced-air warming platforms in U.S. hospitals. It is intended for both pediatric and adult patients and is cleared by the FDA under 510(k) K053645 to Arizant Healthcare, Inc., the original manufacturer prior to acquisition by 3M and the subsequent transition of the Bair Hugger product line to Solventum.

Display and User Interface

The Model 775 uses a front-panel membrane keypad and digital display rather than a touchscreen. Clinicians select one of four temperature setpoints (High, Medium, Low, or Ambient) and one of two airflow settings directly from the front panel, and the digital display indicates the active setpoint and any fault or alarm condition. Hose-end temperature sensing means the displayed and regulated value reflects air temperature at the delivery point — closer to the patient than at the heater outlet — which helps the unit respond quickly when patient demand or hose routing changes. Service and calibration functions are accessed through alternative-mode key combinations described in the OEM service manual; this allows biomed staff to read fault history, cumulative hours, and calibration data without opening the chassis. The interface is intentionally simple, which reduces training time across rotating PACU and OR staff and shortens setup at the start of each case.

Forced-Air Warming Performance and Blanket Compatibility

The 775 delivers warm air at three regulated setpoints — High 109.4°F, Medium 100.4°F, and Low 89.6°F — each held within ±2.7°F, plus an Ambient setting that circulates room-temperature air for thermal comfort without active heating. Three internal temperature sensors plus hose-end sensing provide redundancy for both regulation and over-temperature protection; the audible and visual high-temperature alarm trips at or below 127.4°F (±3°C). Two airflow settings allow clinicians to balance heat delivery against patient comfort and against the surgical field — higher airflow for rapid rewarming, lower airflow for steady-state maintenance and for cases where airflow disturbance is a concern. The hose terminates in a connector compatible with the full Bair Hugger blanket portfolio, including full-body, upper-body, lower-body, underbody, pediatric, and surgical-access blankets, as well as the Flex, Plus, and OR warming gowns. This broad compatibility lets a single 775 unit serve multiple service lines from pre-op staging through PACU recovery.

Filtration and Infection Prevention Considerations

The Model 775 uses an OEM MERV 14 air filter (catalog 90047) on the air intake, the same filter rating used in many hospital HVAC final-filtration stages. Forced-air warming filtration has been the subject of clinical debate over the past decade, and the OEM Operator’s Manual includes a dedicated frequently-asked-questions section addressing filter performance and recommended replacement intervals. Filter replacement is a field-serviceable task that does not require chassis disassembly; cumulative hours of use are reported on the front panel through alternative-mode access, which helps biomed teams plan filter changes based on actual run time rather than calendar interval alone. Facilities running 775 fleets in high-utilization ORs should align filter replacement with the OEM-recommended schedule and document filter changes in the equipment record. The Bair Hugger 241 Blood/Fluid Warming Set is an additional disposable compatible with the 775 for intraoperative warming of crystalloid or blood product through the same forced-air pathway.

Portability, Mounting, and Power

The Model 775 weighs 16 lb and measures 13 inches in each principal dimension, giving it a footprint small enough for a counter, rolling cart, or rail mount. The OEM rolling cart (catalog 90090), optional rolling-cart handle (90094), and accessory mount (90096) are the standard mobility configurations; the unit can also be secured to a bed rail through OEM mounts. The device operates on 110–120 VAC at 50/60 Hz and draws up to 11.7 A under full heating load, which is the principal reason the 775 should be plugged into a hospital-grade circuit rather than shared with high-draw equipment on the same outlet. There is no internal battery — therapy is interrupted if mains power is lost, so patient transport with active warming requires a uninterrupted power path or a brief therapy pause. The replacement power cord (Bair Hugger Power Cord 120V-B, catalog 90224) is OEM-specified and is the same cord covered by the historical 2009 power cord recall described in the FDA section below.

Device Tracking, Fault Codes, and Service Diagnostics

The Model 775 tracks therapy duration per session and cumulative hours through a built-in hour meter, and it logs over-temperature events and fault codes that are retrievable through alternative-mode access from the front panel — no chassis access is required to read service history. This makes the 775 friendly to clinical-engineering workflows: a biomed can perform an incoming inspection or annual PM and pull cumulative use and fault history within seconds. Calibration is verified against the OEM Temperature Test Unit (catalog 22110) or the Bair Hugger Calibration Test Kit (90055), both of which interface with the hose-end sensor circuitry. The service manual documents adjustment procedures, harness diagrams, and component-level troubleshooting for the heater assembly, blower motor, sensor harness, and power supply. Common service items include filter replacement, hose-with-sensor assembly replacement (catalog 90046), and periodic verification of the over-temperature shutdown threshold.

Service and Maintenance Considerations

The Bair Hugger 775 is not a network-connected device and does not integrate with hospital EMR systems — there is no Ethernet, no Wi-Fi, and no patient-data export. This simplifies the cybersecurity posture for the device but means that perioperative documentation of warming therapy must be captured separately in the anesthesia or PACU record. Standard preventive maintenance includes annual electrical safety testing per IEC 60601-1, periodic filter replacement, hose-with-sensor inspection, calibration verification with an OEM test unit, and visual inspection of the chassis and power cord. Because the device draws nearly 12 amps at full load, IPR Medical recommends including a load test as part of incoming inspection, particularly on units that have been in storage or that arrive from a fleet refresh. Replacement parts most commonly requested through IPR include the replacement hose with sensor assembly, replacement filter, sheet clip, rolling cart, and OEM power cord.

FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins

The 3M Bair Hugger Model 775 was subject to one FDA-documented Class 2 device correction involving its OEM AC power cord. In December 2009, Arizant Healthcare, Inc. initiated a nationwide voluntary recall (FDA recall number Z-0895-2010, openFDA cfres_id 88575) of 100/110-volt power cords supplied with multiple Bair Hugger and Bair Paws temperature management units, including the Model 775, Model 750, Model 505, Model 500/OR, and Bair Paws Models 850 and 875. The recall covered Arizant part number 502221, Model 90024 — the original-issue power cord manufactured by Electri-Cord Manufacturing Corporation. The root cause was identified as nonconforming material or component on the power cord assembly. Arizant distributed an Urgent Medical Device Power Cord Recall letter dated December 17, 2009 to biomed and recall coordinators, and a replacement power cord program was set up through arizant.com/powercords. The recall was assigned FDA Class 2 status, and the recall event was formally terminated by the FDA on April 19, 2012. Units in current circulation should already carry the replacement OEM cord; the current OEM-specified replacement power cord for the Model 775 is the Bair Hugger Power Cord 120V-B, catalog number 90224.

Recommended actions: Confirm any Model 775 unit entering or already in service is fitted with the current OEM-specified power cord (Bair Hugger Power Cord 120V-B, catalog 90224) and not a 2009-vintage Arizant 502221/Model 90024 cord. Inspect cords for damage at the strain reliefs and plug body during every preventive-maintenance interval, and replace any cord showing wear or heat discoloration regardless of model year. Document the cord part number in the equipment record so future inspections can verify the unit remained in compliance after the 2012 recall termination.

Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.
