$1,095.00 Original price was: $1,095.00.$995.00Current price is: $995.00.

The Moog Curlin PainSmart IOD EPI is a compact ambulatory infusion pump built on the proven Curlin 6000 platform and factory-configured specifically for epidural pain management. It is purpose-built for patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA), continuous epidural infusion, and subcutaneous pain therapies in postoperative, labor and delivery, palliative care, and ambulatory surgery settings. The EPI designation means the pump’s administration route is fixed to epidural — the Therapy Identifier bar displays “EPI” rather than “PCA” — reducing programming confusion and reinforcing safe practice in clinical environments where epidural lines are managed alongside other infusions.

Like all PainSmart IOD models, the EPI variant features dedicated Info-On-Demand buttons that allow clinicians to view real-time infusion data — hourly totals, boluses attempted and given, shift totals, and line pressure — without pausing the running therapy. The epidural basal rate maximum is 25 ml/h, and patient bolus doses are programmable from 0.1 to 25 ml per dose with a lockout interval of 1 to 60 minutes. Built-in medLMTS™ medication limits, PLSS protocol library support, three tamper-resistant lock levels, and a 6,000-event data log provide comprehensive safety and documentation.  Moog’s yellow-striped epidural administration sets with 0.22 micron filters and integral flow-stop free-flow protection are designed specifically for this pump configuration.

Factory-configured for epidural pain management

The Moog Curlin PainSmart IOD EPI is the epidural-dedicated variant of the PainSmart IOD ambulatory infusion pump. The “EPI” designation means the pump’s administration route is factory-fixed to epidural — the Therapy Identifier bar on the display reads “EPI” rather than “PCA,” and the IV route is not available to the end user. This eliminates the possibility of inadvertently programming an epidural infusion under IV parameters, a meaningful safety layer in busy clinical environments where epidural lines are managed alongside other infusions. The pump retains full subcutaneous (SQ) capability for facilities that administer subcutaneous pain therapies on the same device. Epidural basal rate is capped at 25 ml/h and patient bolus doses range from 0.1 to 25 ml per dose — both within the safety envelope appropriate for epidural administration.

Info-On-Demand — real-time bedside data without pausing the infusion

The PainSmart IOD EPI’s dedicated Info-On-Demand buttons allow clinicians to view real-time infusion data — hourly totals, boluses attempted and given, shift totals, and downstream line pressure — at the touch of a button without pausing the running epidural infusion. The requested data displays for several seconds and the screen returns to the standard EPI run view automatically. This gives anesthesiologists, labor and delivery nurses, and pain management teams actionable data at the bedside to support faster titration decisions, better documentation during rounds, and more informed patient communication — all without interrupting therapy.

Curvilinear peristaltic mechanism — precision flow for epidural delivery

The PainSmart IOD EPI uses Moog’s patented curvilinear peristaltic pumping mechanism, which delivers fluid in 2-microliter increments — significantly finer than conventional linear peristaltic pumps. This translates to smoother, more consistent flow at every rate, with particular advantages at the low rates typical of epidural infusions where continuity of flow directly impacts patient comfort and analgesic efficacy. Flow rates range from 0.1 to 400 ml/h in 0.1 ml/h increments with ±5% accuracy when used with proprietary Curlin administration sets. The fine flow resolution and patented mechanism design minimize the pulsatile delivery common in standard peristaltic pumps, supporting steady-state drug levels in the epidural space.

EPI-specific medication limits and protocol library

The PainSmart IOD EPI features a dedicated EPI medLIMITS setup screen with customizable maximum epidural basal rate, bolus dose, clinician dose, and load dose limits — all enforced by the pump’s medLMTS™ system, which prevents programming values outside of predetermined safe ranges. Patient bolus lockout is adjustable from 1 to 60 minutes with a maximum of 15 boluses per hour. When paired with Moog’s Protocol Library Safety System (PLSS), the pump accepts pre-validated epidural drug protocols uploaded via software — eliminating manual programming for common epidural regimens and reducing the opportunity for dosing errors. PLSS supports over 100 protocols organized by clinical category, and EPI dose schedules and medLMTS™ limits are maintained across therapy repeats for consistent patient management.

Yellow-striped epidural administration sets with 0.22 micron filtration

Moog manufactures yellow-striped epidural-specific administration sets designed for use with the PainSmart IOD EPI. These sets feature 0.22 micron filters for particulate and microbial retention, no injection ports (eliminating the risk of accidental injection into the epidural line), and yellow striping for immediate visual identification as an epidural set — a critical safety feature in clinical environments where multiple infusion lines converge at the bedside. All Curlin administration sets are manufactured from non-DEHP PVC without natural rubber latex and feature Moog’s integral flow-stop device — a spring-activated, self-clamping mechanism that automatically occludes the tubing when the pump door is opened, preventing inadvertent free flow. Administration set usage should not exceed 72 hours per standards of practice. Anti-siphon valve (ASV) sets are available for additional free-flow protection.

Security, safety, and comprehensive alarm system

Three tamper-resistant lock levels — controlled by a 5 or 9 digit clinician access code — allow facilities to restrict patient access to programming functions while maintaining clinician control. The PainSmart IOD EPI’s integral alarm system monitors for air-in-line, upstream and downstream occlusion, high upstream pressure, door open, set not installed, unattended pump, replace set, empty battery, and infusion complete conditions. Downstream occlusion sensitivity is adjustable between High and Low settings. The maximum volume that may be infused under single fault conditions is 0.8 ml. Alarm volume is adjustable across nine levels but cannot be fully disabled. A 6,000-event data log records line pressure, volume infused, and time stamps — downloadable via Patient History Manager (PHM) or PLSS software for compliance documentation and clinical review.

Up to 85 hours on two standard C-cell batteries

The PainSmart IOD EPI runs on two readily available C-cell alkaline batteries — no proprietary battery packs required for standard operation. Operating times range from approximately 10 hours at 400 ml/h to 85 hours at 2 ml/h, making multi-day epidural therapy practical on a single set of batteries. For facility-based or extended use, an optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack and AC adapter/charger are available. The pump’s large LCD display features Tallman Lettering for improved drug name readability, with continuous backlighting when connected to AC power. At 1.1 lbs and 5.1 × 4.0 × 2.5 inches, the PainSmart IOD EPI is compact enough to be carried in a soft carry pack or holster for ambulatory patients, pole-mounted for bedside use, or secured in a lockable safety shell. IPX1 water resistance protects against dripping water, and the impact-resistant housing is designed for the demands of both ambulatory and facility-based patient care.

Clinical applications

The PainSmart IOD EPI supports diverse pain management therapies across acute, perioperative, and ambulatory environments. Common applications include continuous epidural or PCEA infusions following major surgeries, PCEA administration during labor and delivery, continuous subcutaneous or epidural analgesia for chronic or terminal pain in palliative care settings, portable pain management supporting early discharge protocols in ambulatory surgery centers, and rapid-setup pain relief in emergency and acute care scenarios. Any epidural therapy should be managed and monitored by medical professionals familiar with epidural administration and its clinical management, and all medications administered into the epidural space must be delivered via specially designed indwelling catheters inserted by a qualified physician.
