Curlin Painsmart
The Moog Curlin PainSmart is a compact, lightweight ambulatory infusion pump built on the proven Curlin 6000 platform and designed specifically for PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia), PCEA, and subcutaneous pain management therapies. At just 1.1 lbs and roughly the size of a deck of cards, the PainSmart supports intravenous, epidural, and subcutaneous administration routes with delivery in milliliters, milligrams, or micrograms. Flow rates range from 0.1 to 400 ml/h with 0.1 ml/h resolution, and the patented curvilinear peristaltic mechanism delivers fluid in 2-microliter increments for exceptionally smooth, consistent delivery — particularly important for short half-life drugs and low-rate infusions.
The PainSmart features built-in medication limits (medLMTS™), customizable maximum basal, bolus, clinician dose, and load dose limits, adjustable downstream occlusion settings, an integral air-in-line sensor, and three tamper-resistant lock levels for patient safety. The optional Info-On-Demand (IOD) model adds real-time bedside access to hourly totals, bolus data, and infusion status without pausing the pump. The pump runs on two standard C-cell alkaline batteries with operating times up to 85 hours at 2 ml/h, and accepts an optional rechargeable Li-Ion battery pack and AC adapter for extended or facility-based use.

Purpose-built for PCA and pain management
The Moog Curlin PainSmart is an ambulatory infusion pump designed specifically for patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), PCEA, and subcutaneous pain management therapies. Built on the proven Curlin 6000 platform, it supports three administration routes — intravenous, epidural, and subcutaneous — with delivery programmable in milliliters, milligrams, or micrograms. Institutions can lock the pump to a specific route and unit of measure via software configuration, ensuring that bedside staff program within approved parameters every time. At 1.1 lbs and 5.1 × 4.0 × 2.5 inches, the PainSmart is compact enough to be carried in one of four available soft carry packs, pole-mounted, holstered, or placed inside a lockable safety shell.
Curvilinear peristaltic mechanism — smoother delivery at every rate
The PainSmart uses Moog’s patented curvilinear peristaltic pumping mechanism, which delivers fluid in 2-microliter increments — significantly finer than conventional linear peristaltic pumps. This translates to smoother, more consistent flow at all rates, with particular advantages at the low rates common in PCA and epidural infusions. Flow rates range from 0.1 to 400 ml/h in 0.1 ml/h increments with ±5% accuracy when used with proprietary Curlin administration sets. PCA basal rate maximums are route-specific: up to 50 ml/h IV, 25 ml/h epidural, and 5 ml/h subcutaneous.
Built-in medication limits and protocol library support
The PainSmart features medLMTS™ — customizable medication limits that prevent programming values outside of predetermined safe ranges for basal rate, bolus dose, clinician dose, and load dose. Patient bolus doses are programmable from 0.1 to 9.9 ml with a lockout interval of 1 to 60 minutes and a maximum of 15 boluses per hour. When paired with Moog’s Protocol Library Safety System (PLSS), the pump accepts pre-validated drug protocols uploaded via software — eliminating manual programming for common regimens and reducing the opportunity for dosing errors. PLSS supports over 100 protocols organized by clinical category.
Security, safety, and comprehensive alarm system
Three tamper-resistant lock levels — controlled by a 5 or 9 digit clinician access code — allow facilities to restrict patient access to programming functions while maintaining clinician control. The PainSmart’s integral alarm system monitors for air-in-line, upstream and downstream occlusion, high upstream pressure, door open, set not installed, unattended pump, replace set, empty battery, and infusion complete conditions. Downstream occlusion sensitivity is adjustable between High and Low settings. The maximum volume that may be infused under single fault conditions is 0.8 ml. Alarm volume is adjustable across nine levels but cannot be fully disabled, ensuring alarms are always audible. A 6,000-event data log records line pressure, volume infused, and time stamps for compliance documentation and clinical review.
Up to 85 hours on two standard C-cell batteries
The PainSmart runs on two readily available C-cell alkaline batteries — no proprietary battery packs required for standard operation. Operating times range from approximately 10 hours at 400 ml/h to 85 hours at 2 ml/h, making multi-day ambulatory therapy practical on a single set of batteries. For facility-based or extended use, an optional rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack and AC adapter/charger are available. The pump requires a mandatory two-key-press sequence to power off during a running infusion, preventing accidental therapy interruption. IPX1 water resistance protects against dripping water, and the impact-resistant housing is designed for the demands of ambulatory patient use.
Proprietary administration sets with built-in free-flow protection
The PainSmart uses proprietary Curlin administration sets manufactured from non-DEHP PVC without natural rubber latex. Every set features Moog’s integral flow-stop device — a spring-activated, self-clamping mechanism that automatically occludes the tubing when the pump door is opened, preventing inadvertent free flow. Set configurations include standard microbore, 0.22 and 1.2 micron filtered sets, yellow-striped epidural-specific sets, and sets with 150 ml integral fluid reservoirs. Administration set usage should not exceed 72 hours per standards of practice. Anti-siphon valve (ASV) sets are available for additional free-flow protection in clinical situations where it is indicated.
