Overview
The GE CARESCAPE V100 — commonly referred to in the field as the DINAMAP V100 or CARESCAPE V100 DINAMAP — is GE HealthCare’s purpose-built vital signs monitor for sub-acute and low-acuity care areas. It is the descendant of the DINAMAP ProCare Series 100 to 400 and the DINAMAP Pro 1000 with SuperSTAT, both of which served as predicate devices in its FDA 510(k) submission (K073203, cleared November 2007). The V100 was designed and is manufactured by GE Medical Systems Information Technologies, Inc. — the same business unit that produces the higher-acuity CARESCAPE Bx50 bedside monitors and the Dash 3000/4000/5000 family — which is why the V100 shares the same DINAMAP NIBP algorithm core, Masimo SET and Nellcor OxiMax SpO2 options, and Alaris thermometry accessories used elsewhere in the GE patient monitoring portfolio. Its core value proposition is workflow efficiency: a single nurse can carry the V100 from one patient to the next, run a 14-second SuperSTAT NIBP determination, capture SpO2 and temperature, and either print the strip locally on the integrated thermal printer or send the readings to an EMR via the HostComm port. Because the same monitor can be configured for spot-check workflow or for continuous monitoring, a single hardware platform can serve both rounding nurses on a med-surg floor and longer-term observation in step-down or recovery areas.
Display and User Interface
The V100 uses a large red LED numerical display sized for at-a-distance viewing — a deliberate choice for sub-acute and ambulatory settings where clinicians need to read a blood pressure, pulse, SpO2, or temperature value while moving around the bedside or workstation. The user interface is built around a small membrane keypad with single-purpose hard keys: a one-step Inflate/Stop button to start or stop an NIBP determination, dedicated Cycle and History keys, a Print key for the optional integrated thermal printer, a Menu key, +/- keys for adjustable settings, an On/Off key, and a Silence (Alarm Mute) key that suppresses audible alarms for 2 minutes. Help cards integrated into the front of the monitor walk new users through the most common workflows. Because all operations are accessible directly from the keypad without nested menus, training overhead is low — most clinicians can be productive on the V100 within a single shift. The monitor offers four operating modes: Clinical mode for standard patient monitoring, Configuration mode for parameter and alarm-limit defaults, Advanced configuration mode for unit-level settings, and Service mode for biomed access.
Clinical Measurements and Module Support
The V100’s core measurement is non-invasive blood pressure via the DINAMAP family of algorithms. Three NIBP algorithm variants are available, fixed at the time of manufacture: DINAMAP SuperSTAT, which references the central aortic intra-arterial pressure and uses stepped deflation with peak-matching to provide determinations as fast as 14 seconds while rejecting motion artifact; DINAMAP Classic, which also uses the intra-arterial reference and is the longer-established GE algorithm; and DINAMAP Auscultatory Reference, which uses the auscultatory cuff-and-stethoscope reference for adult and pediatric populations (and reverts to intra-arterial reference for neonates by design, since the auscultatory method is not validated for neonates). Pulse rate is derived from the NIBP determination and from the SpO2 channel when equipped. SpO2 is offered in three technology variants: GE Ohmeda TruSignal (with TS-series sensors), Nellcor OxiMax (with the SCP-10 cable and OxiMax MAX-series digital probes — the V100 OxiMax variant does not support older Nellcor R-cal resistor-id probes or RS-10/Oxisensor II accessories), and Masimo SET (with LNOP and LNCS sensor families). Temperature is offered in three variants: the Exergen TemporalScanner for non-contact temporal-artery readings, the Alaris Turbo Temp predictive thermometer with oral readings in approximately 7 seconds, and the Alaris Tri-Site predictive thermometer for oral, axillary, and rectal sites with readings in approximately 11 seconds. All three temperature options use isolated probes that are removable and individually replaceable as field-replaceable units.
Software Versions and Platform Evolution
Field-service documentation for the V100 covers software through R1.5, with revision RAA noted in the operator’s manual as functionally equivalent to R1.5 from a user perspective (no user-apparent differences). The current production main board is the v1.5 MS2011 board (GE Service Shop part number 2037103-087), which is keyed to the Masimo SET MS-2011 SpO2 implementation; equivalent main-board variants exist for the TruSignal and Nellcor OxiMax SpO2 configurations. The fascia kit, bezel, and label set vary by the parameter combination ordered (BP only; BP and SpO2; BP and temperature; or BP, SpO2, and temperature) — for example, GE Service Shop part 2037103-086 covers the bezel for monitors equipped with NIBP, SpO2, and temperature on the MS-2011 platform, while GE Service Shop part 2037103-062 (equivalent to 2037103-019) covers the English fascia kit with all four label-texture variants for parameter combinations. Biomed teams reconciling a V100 fleet should record the SpO2 technology variant (TruSignal, Masimo SET, or Nellcor OxiMax), the NIBP algorithm variant (SuperSTAT, Classic, or Auscultatory), the temperature option (Exergen, Alaris Turbo Temp, Alaris Tri-Site, or none), the printer presence, and the main-board software revision; these five attributes together determine which FRUs, sensor families, and software updates apply to a given unit.
Portability and Power
The V100 weighs 5.4 lbs with battery installed and measures 7.7 x 8.6 x 5.3 inches in its standard configuration (the case is 1.4 inches wider — 7.7 x 10 x 5.3 inches — when the Alaris temperature option is fitted, to accommodate the temperature-probe well on the right-hand side). A recessed integrated handle on top of the monitor allows single-hand carry between rooms, and rubber feet on the bottom let the V100 sit stably on any work surface. For unit-level standardization, GE offers the DINAMAP Mobility Workstation roll stand, which raises the mounting platform from 39 to 49 inches above the floor on five 3-inch non-locking casters and includes a 5.75 x 10.375 x 6.625 inch accessory basket; the complete roll stand assembly weighs 24 lbs. Power input is universal: the 2018859-001 universal power adapter accepts 100 to 250 Vac at 12 VA and outputs 12 Vdc at 1 A. The internal sealed lead-acid battery (6 V, 3.3 Ah) is GE’s standard battery for the V100 (Service Shop part 2037103-016, equivalent to 633178CR) and delivers up to 5 hours of runtime when SpO2 and temperature are active with NIBP every 5 minutes, or up to 11.5 hours on non-SpO2 configurations with NIBP every 15 minutes. Charge time is approximately 5 hours from full discharge with the monitor off, or roughly 8 hours when charging while the monitor is on. The IPX1 water-ingress rating allows for routine cleaning with most chemical hospital cleansers without compromising the seal around the keypad and connectors, and the unit is defibrillator-proof Type BF when used with recommended accessories.
Trending, History, and Documentation
The V100 stores up to 40 measurements covering up to 24 hours in internal memory, accessible from the History key on the front panel. When equipped with the optional integrated thermal printer, stored measurements can be printed locally as a strip; printer paper is GE part number 770137. Print output supports 16 languages including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hungarian, Polish, Czech, Finnish, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Slovak, and others, although certain languages (Russian, Greek, Korean, Japanese, Turkish, Lithuanian) are documented as not printable on the integrated printer. The V100’s alarm system follows IEC 60601-1-8 patterns and provides audible and visual alarms with adjustable parameter limits; the Silence button mutes audible alarms for 2 minutes and the alarm-silence indicator illuminates solid red while alarms are silenced. A remote alarm output is exposed on the host communications port and is independently fused. Adjustable inflation setpoints in the NIBP configuration menu let clinicians match the initial cuff target pressure to specific patient circumstances — particularly useful when monitoring patients with known low or unusually high blood pressure where the default initial inflation would either under-pressurize or be uncomfortable.
Network and EMR Integration
The V100 is not designed as a networked bedside monitor in the same sense as the CARESCAPE Bx50 family — it does not connect to the CARESCAPE Network or Unity Network directly. Instead, the V100 exposes a single DB15 host communications connector (HostComm) on the rear that supports a range of accessory cables and adapters: USB cables for direct connection to a PC running clinical-data-capture software, RS-232 cables for serial connection, and IrDA transceivers for wireless infrared transfer. The DINAMAP Serial Hub (sold separately) plugs into the HostComm port and breaks out three additional accessory connections, allowing simultaneous attachment of a barcode scanner, a workflow tablet, and an EMR connector — a common configuration when V100s are deployed as part of a Capsule Technologie or Cerner-integrated mobile vitals workflow. GE has provided software development kits to facilitate clinical-data-capture integration with third-party EMR and middleware vendors. The remote alarm output on the host port is independently isolated and fused, allowing the V100 to drive an external alarm aggregator or nurse-call system without compromising patient isolation. Because the V100 was cleared in 2007 (well before contemporary medical-device cybersecurity guidance was issued), facilities running V100s in HIPAA-sensitive workflows should treat the HostComm connection as a wired data path, segment it appropriately on the hospital network, and disable IrDA transceivers when not actively in use.
FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins
As of the date of this listing, the FDA Medical Device Recalls Database does not list a Class 1 or Class 2 recall specific to the CARESCAPE V100 vital signs monitor itself. However, an accessory-level FDA Class 1 recall directly affects V100 monitors that are configured with the GE Ohmeda TruSignal SpO2 option. In May 2023, GE HealthCare initiated a Class 1 recall of certain TruSignal SpO2 sensors after identifying three issues with affected sensors: they may reduce the amount of energy delivered during external defibrillation when the SpO2 sensor and a defibrillator are used on the same patient; they may unintentionally expose patients to electrical currents from other sources; and they may provide inaccurate SpO2 readings. The recall covers TruSignal AllFit disposable sensors and the reusable Sensitive Skin sensor among others, with approximately 7,559 affected devices distributed in the U.S. between January 2021 and May 2023. GE HealthCare distributed an Urgent Medical Device Correction notice on May 19, 2023 with detailed actions for affected facilities. The V100 hardware itself is not affected by this recall — the issue is at the SpO2 sensor level — but any V100 in service with TruSignal SpO2 should have its sensor inventory audited against the affected lot and serial numbers in the GE notice. Facilities should also note that the V100’s IEC 60601-1-2 (2001) EMC compliance reflects the standards applicable at the device’s 2007 clearance and may not align with newer EMC requirements for high-density wireless environments.
Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.
