Overview
The GE Dash 4000 is the mid-size member of the Dash 3000/4000/5000 portable patient monitor family — a long-running platform from GE Medical Systems Information Technologies (now GE HealthCare) built around a fixed core parameter set with optional invasive pressure, CO2, BISx, and ancillary module support. It pairs a 10.4-inch active-matrix color TFT LCD with the same Trim Knob navigation, Multi-Link patient cabling, and CARESCAPE Network compatibility used across the GE bedside monitor line. The Dash 4000 is positioned as a flexible bedside-and-transport device: it works as a standalone monitor when disconnected from the network and as a fully networked bedside when docked, allowing a single monitor to follow a patient from the ED through the OR, PACU, ICU, and step-down unit without forcing a hand-off to a different device. Modular options — 12SL diagnostic ECG with ACI-TIPI, EK-Pro arrhythmia analysis, DINAMAP SuperSTAT NIBP, IntelliRate alarm reduction — are the same algorithms used in higher-acuity GE monitors of the same era, which is why the Dash 4000 remains common in fleets that mix Solar, Eagle, and CARESCAPE bedside hardware.
Display and User Interface
The Dash 4000 uses a 10.4-inch active-matrix color TFT LCD with a 640 x 480 pixel resolution, capable of showing up to seven simultaneous waveform traces and displaying numeric parameters prioritized by clinical importance. The display is housed in a shock-absorbing isolator behind an acrylic optical filter with anti-glare and scratch-resistant surface coatings — a design intended to withstand the bumps and incidental impacts that come with intra-hospital transport. The user interface is built around the Trim Knob rotary control: a single 24-position encoder with a push-to-select switch that handles virtually all menu navigation. Five hard keys flank the Trim Knob — Power, Print/Graph Go-Stop, NBP Go/Stop, Zero All, and Silence Alarm/Admit — and the same five-key layout has been familiar to GE-trained clinicians for two decades, which keeps training overhead low when a Dash 4000 is added to a fleet that already includes other Dash, Solar, or Eagle monitors. An optional 18-key remote control provides full bedside operation from across the room and can be configured for adult, neonatal, or operating room workflows.
Clinical Measurements and Module Support
The Dash 4000’s Data Acquisition System (DAS) is built around a fixed core parameter set — ECG, impedance respiration, NIBP, SpO2, and temperature — with invasive pressure, BISx, and EtCO2 available as factory or field options. ECG is acquired through the green Multi-Link 11-pin connector and supports 3-, 5-, and 10-leadwire cables, with EK-Pro four-lead arrhythmia analysis and the optional 12SL diagnostic 12-lead algorithm with Gender Specific Criteria and ACI-TIPI for cardiac ischemia probability scoring. Three SpO2 configurations exist as DAS variants: GE Ohmeda (which also supports Nellcor probes), Masimo SET, and Nellcor OxiMax — the SpO2 hardware variant is fixed at the DAS level and cannot be field-converted between technologies. NIBP on Masimo SET and Nellcor OxiMax DAS variants uses the DINAMAP SuperSTAT algorithm with stepped deflation and peak-matching artifact rejection. Invasive pressure ranges from 0 to 4 channels depending on DAS variant. Temperature shares its connector and analog front-end with the optional thermodilution cardiac output channel, so the two parameters cannot run concurrently on the same channel. Optional CO2 is delivered through an external CapnoFlex Low Flow Sidestream module or Novametrix Capnostat III mainstream sensor, with the host monitor providing the IR drive and signal-processing circuitry. Aspect BISx (software v6 or later) and the SAM and ICG modules through the TRAM-rac 2A module housing extend the platform into anesthesia depth and impedance cardiography.
Software Versions and Platform Evolution
The Dash 4000 has shipped under two distinct hardware product codes during its lifecycle. The legacy product code is SBG, which is compatible with main software releases prior to v6.10. The current production hardware product code is SHQ, which the GE service manual specifically notes is only compatible with software v6.10 or later — this matters because spare-parts compatibility, including the assembly drawings in the official service manual (GE document 2000966-542D), is keyed to the SHQ product code. Software has progressed through major releases up to version 7. Software v6 introduced the Aspect BISx option and broader CARESCAPE Network features. Software v7 added 802.11 a/b/g WLAN support (and is the minimum software level for that wireless option) and is required for compatibility with the Dash Port 2 docking station running v2.1 or later. The monitor ships with a Basic software package that covers standard-of-care monitoring, lethal arrhythmia detection, and dose calculations; two additional software packages, Cardiac (full arrhythmia and ST analysis) and Cardiopulmonary (PA insert/wedge, IABP algorithm, thermodilution cardiac output, hemodynamic and pulmonary calculations), can be added independently or together. Three software options layer further capability: High Resolution CRG Trends (24 hours of CRG trend data plus 100 CRG events), 12SL with Gender Specific Criteria and ACI-TIPI, and the CARESCAPE Network option for centralized viewing and Combo or Rover Combo workflows. Biomed teams reconciling a Dash 4000 fleet should verify both the hardware product code (SBG vs SHQ, visible on the rear product code label) and the active main software version, as the two together determine which FRUs, batteries, and software updates apply to a given unit.
Portability and Power
The Dash 4000 is purpose-built for movement between care areas. It weighs 12.6 lbs, fits within a 10.8 x 11.5 x 9.6 in envelope, and incorporates an integrated handle assembly that doubles as the optional alarm-light housing on the Dash 3000 sibling and as part of the display bezel on the Dash 4000 and 5000. The internal switching power supply accepts 115 V or 230 V via a rear line-voltage selector switch (no AC mains switch is provided), and the +9–18 V internal power bus is converted locally for each subsystem to minimize cumulative conversion loss. There are no fans — cooling is by natural convection — which lowers ambient noise in PACU and step-down areas and removes a common service failure point. Two smart Lithium-Ion battery bays accept the GE Flex 11.1 V pack (OEM P/N 2017857-002, with equivalents 419068-001/-002/-003/-005 and SM201-6). New, fully-charged batteries deliver approximately 2.5 hours of runtime each, with run time varying based on parameter mix (NBP, CO2, and SpO2 are the largest battery drains), wireless use, and display brightness. Each battery contains an integrated electronic fuel gauge and protection circuit, and Dash software v5.4 or later only recognizes and charges GE-approved batteries; non-approved packs will run the monitor on stored charge but will not charge in-monitor and will display an ERROR message in the on-screen capacity gauge. The on-screen battery capacity gauges show both Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity, allowing biomed staff to identify aged batteries that have lost more than 20% of original capacity.
Trending, Event Surveillance, and Clinical Decision Support
The Dash 4000 maintains 24 hours of 1-minute resolution patient trends in battery-backed SRAM even when operated as a standalone monitor away from a central station, plus an internal error log of 50 input and 50 output errors that biomed teams can pull via PC using netUpdate, via a CIC Pro central station, or via Centralscope. With the High Resolution CRG Trends software option, the monitor adds up to 24 hours of high-resolution CRG trend data and 100 stored CRG events — a configuration commonly seen in NICU deployments where granular trend visibility is clinically valuable. Alarm management is structured around four priorities (Crisis, Warning, Advisory, Message) with audible and visual notification, including the bezel-mounted alarm light that flashes red for Crisis-level patient status alarms and yellow for Warning-level patient status and system alarms. A 1-minute single-alarm silence and configurable pause windows (5 minutes adult ICU, 3 minutes neonatal ICU, 5 or 15 minutes or permanent pause in OR mode) reduce alarm fatigue without disabling system alarms. The optional IntelliRate algorithm further reduces nuisance alarms in adult cardiac monitoring by combining pace-pulse and arrhythmia information before annunciating heart-rate alarms. With the optional 12SL diagnostic ECG analysis program and ACI-TIPI, the monitor produces a numerical probability score for acute cardiac ischemia from a recorded 12-lead ECG, which can be transmitted to the MUSE ECG database for serial comparison.
Network and EMR Integration
The Dash 4000 carries a single RJ-45 Ethernet port for the CARESCAPE Network (the GE network formerly marketed as Unity Network — the same physical and logical network, renamed during the CARESCAPE-era branding consolidation). The network operates at 10 Mbps half-duplex, supports up to 1,000 devices per segment, and is wired with CAT-5 twisted pair using a star topology terminated at network switches. Communication priority is layered: a connected Dash Port 2 docking station takes precedence over the rear hardwired Ethernet connection, which in turn takes precedence over the optional 802.11 a/b/g wireless card; transitions between connection modes occur within three seconds of cable connect or disconnect. The CARESCAPE Network supports centralized viewing on CIC Pro and Centralscope central stations, peer-to-peer monitor viewing among Dash, Solar, and Eagle bedside monitors, and integration with the MUSE ECG database for diagnostic ECG storage and serial comparison. EMR integration is delivered through the GE CARESCAPE Gateway using standard HL7 messaging when configured. The Dash Port 2 docking station extends the network connection plus AC power, an Aux serial port, and a remote-display output to a fixed bedside or roll-stand position, allowing the patient monitor itself to be lifted off and carried during transport without breaking network configuration. An optional remote display, when paired with Dash Port 2 v2.1+ and Dash software v7.2+, allows a second view of the patient up to 150 feet from the bedside.
FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins
The Dash 3000/4000/5000 platform has been the subject of multiple FDA Class 2 device corrections during its production life, recorded in the FDA Medical Device Recalls Database. Of particular relevance to clinicians and biomed staff are the corrections covering five distinct software-related issues identified in software version 6.0 and higher: a condition where the Dash stops communication on the Unity/CARESCAPE Network (resulting in loss of monitoring at the central station); a condition where the Dash displays a distorted ECG waveform in combination monitoring mode; a condition where the Dash incorrectly assumes the network time-master role; a condition where the Dash date reverts to 1993; and a condition where the Dash Port 2 docking station stops communicating on the Unity/CARESCAPE Network (again resulting in loss of monitoring at the central station). GE Healthcare addressed these issues through software upgrades distributed under Urgent Medical Device Correction letters, with the corrective software versions identified in the relevant field safety notices. Additional FDA-recognized corrections have covered Dash 4000-specific and Dash family-wide service-related issues; the FDA Medical Device Recalls Database lists multiple events under “Dash 3000,” “Dash 4000,” “Dash 5000,” and “Dash 3000/4000/5000” search terms.
Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.
