GE E-CAiO Compact Airway Module | 5-Agent, CO2/N2O/O2, Sidestream
The GE E-CAiO is a single-width plug-in airway gas module for CARESCAPE Monitor B450, B650, and B850 platforms, S/5 modular monitors, and AS/3 anesthesia monitors. It uses sidestream sampling and GE infrared/paramagnetic sensor technology to measure inspired and end-tidal CO2, N2O, O2, and all five common anesthetic agents (halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, desflurane), with automatic agent identification and detection of two-agent mixtures. The E-CAiO is the entry-level Compact Airway Module in the C-A-i-O family — without patient spirometry (V) or gas exchange (X) — making it the right choice for OR and PACU environments that need full anesthetic agent monitoring but rely on the anesthesia machine’s own ventilator for spirometry.

Overview
The GE E-CAiO is the entry point of the Compact Airway Module family, GE’s single-width plug-in airway gas analyzer line that succeeded the M-Series Datex-Ohmeda compact airway modules and preceded the smaller E-sCAiO generation. In one module slot it provides full anesthesia gas monitoring — sidestream CO2, N2O, patient O2, and identification and quantification of all five common anesthetic agents (halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, desflurane) — using GE infrared technology for CO2/N2O/agents and GE differential paramagnetic technology for O2. The “C-A-i-O” naming follows GE’s compact airway nomenclature: C for CO2 and N2O, A for anesthetic agents, i for agent identification, and O for patient O2. The E-CAiO does not include patient spirometry (V) or gas exchange (X), which is what distinguishes it from the E-CAiOV and E-CAiOVX siblings. Facilities running the E-CAiO typically rely on the anesthesia machine’s own ventilator for spirometry data and use the module exclusively for the gas analysis side of the airway picture. The module operates as a plug-in in CARESCAPE B450, B650, and B850 monitors, S/5/AS/3/CS/3 modular monitors, and Avance, Aisys, and Engstrom Carestation workstations.
Display and User Interface
The E-CAiO itself does not include a screen. Display, alarms, trends, and configuration are managed by the host monitor — the CARESCAPE B450, B650, or B850 in CARESCAPE deployments, or the AS/3, CS/3, or S/5 in legacy modular monitor deployments. The module front panel carries the gas sample inlet, gas sample exhaust port, and the D-fend water trap. CO2, O2, N2O, and anesthetic agent waveforms and inspired/end-tidal numerics inherit the host monitor’s screen layout, color scheme, and care-area configuration. N2O and anesthetic agent values display only when the host is configured with anesthesia software (CARESCAPE ANE/PACU packages, AS/3 and S/5 ANE software); on ICU or ED packages, N2O and AA values are not shown but are still measured internally and used for CO2 and O2 cross-effect compensation. Alarm thresholds for FiCO2, EtCO2, FiO2, EtO2, FiN2O, EtAA, FiAA, and respiration rate are all set on the host.
Clinical Measurements and Gas Analysis Capability
CO2 is measured by GE infrared technology over a range of 0 to 15 vol% with ±(0.2 vol% + 2% of reading) accuracy; respiration rate is calculated from the CO2 waveform over 4 to 60 breaths/min, with detection triggered by 1% CO2 variation and a configurable apnea alarm. Patient O2 is measured by GE differential paramagnetic technology over 0 to 100 vol% with ±(1 vol% + 2% of reading) accuracy, returning FiO2, EtO2, FiO2-EtO2 difference, and waveform. N2O is measured by infrared over 0 to 100 vol% with ±(2 vol% + 2% of reading) accuracy for concentrations up to 85%, with a fixed FiN2O alarm above 82%. Anesthetic agents are measured and identified by infrared with measurement ranges of 0 to 8 vol% for sevoflurane, 0 to 20 vol% for desflurane, and 0 to 6 vol% for isoflurane, enflurane, and halothane, all with ±(0.15 vol% + 5% of reading) accuracy and a 0.15 vol% identification threshold. The module identifies single agents and detects two-agent mixtures, and provides MAC and MACage calculations with age, temperature, and ambient pressure compensation. All measurements include automatic compensation for atmospheric pressure variation from 500 to 800 mmHg, temperature, and CO2/N2O and CO2/O2 collision broadening — the same compensation set inherited from the original Datex-Ohmeda gas analysis platform that has been the foundation of GE airway gas monitoring for over two decades.
Module Family Context — When to Choose E-CAiO vs. E-CAiOV vs. E-CAiOVX
Within the Compact Airway Module family, the trade-offs are predictable. The E-CAiO is the gas-only variant — full agent monitoring but no patient spirometry and no gas exchange. The E-CAiOV adds GE-patented D-lite/D-lite+ and Pedi-lite/Pedi-lite+ flow sensor support for patient spirometry: airway pressures, tidal and minute volumes, compliance, airway resistance, I:E ratio, pressure-volume and flow-volume loops, and continuous intrinsic, extrinsic, and total PEEP. The E-CAiOVX adds direct measurement of oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2), with derived values for energy expenditure (EE) and respiratory quotient (RQ) — useful for ventilator weaning, metabolic studies, and ICU protocols where caloric needs are titrated to measured energy expenditure. Within the broader CARESCAPE airway gas catalog, the E-CO/E-COV/E-COVX series omits the anesthetic agent measurement (no “Ai”) and is intended for critical care rather than anesthesia; the E-miniC is a stripped-down sidestream CO2-only module; and the newer E-sCAiO/E-sCAiOV/E-sCAiOVX line is the small-form-factor successor generation introduced after this Compact Airway family. Facilities standardizing on a CARESCAPE B650 or B850 fleet for OR use commonly choose the E-CAiO for plain anesthesia rooms, the E-CAiOV for cases requiring lung-protective ventilation strategy, and the E-CAiOVX for ICU step-down beds where indirect calorimetry is part of the protocol.
Software Versions and Platform Evolution
The E-CAiO is a hardware acquisition module; its measurement firmware is resident on internal sensor and CPU boards (TPX gas measurement, OM oxygen measurement, CPU). Display software, alarm logic, trend storage, and care-area-specific feature gating all run on the host monitor. This means the E-CAiO’s clinical capabilities track the host monitor software baseline. On AS/3, CS/3, and S/5 modular hosts, the module requires software S-STD94, S-ARK94, S-ANE97, S-ICU97 or later versions to be recognized; on CARESCAPE B450, B650, and B850 hosts, the E-CAiO is supported across all production CARESCAPE software versions, with the displayed parameter set varying by care-area package — full N2O and AA in the ANE and PACU packages, CO2 and O2 only in the ICU and ED packages (N2O and AA still measured internally for cross-effect compensation, just not displayed). The module pre-dates the smaller E-sCAiO generation and the CARESCAPE Canvas platform, but it remains supported on the current CARESCAPE B-series hosts that hospitals operate today. Module assembly SKUs vary by regional catalog and language configuration; IPR Medical can confirm the exact GE part number that matches a given facility’s revision and configuration requirement.
Service and Maintenance Considerations
The E-CAiO is calibration-dependent and consumable-dependent in ways the hemodynamic modules (E-PSM, E-PSMP, PDM) are not. The D-fend water trap is a user-replaceable consumable separating water and mucus from the gas sample line; GE specifies different D-fend variants for anesthesia and critical care applications. Sample lines are single-patient-use disposables. Periodic calibration with GE-recommended calibration gas mixtures is required at OEM-specified intervals. The internal gas sampling pump, infrared bench, and paramagnetic O2 sensor are the most failure-prone elements on aged modules; symptoms include “Low gas sample flow” or “Check sample gas out” alarms (often resolved by water trap replacement, sample line replacement, or exhaust port checks before deeper service is needed), drifting O2 readings, and slow response time. The TPX (gas analysis), OM (oxygen measurement), and PVX boards are all individually serviceable per the technical manual. IPR Medical performs full functional testing, calibration with traceable gas standards, and electrical safety testing as part of refurbishment.
Trending and Anesthetic Record-Keeping
Clinical data acquired by the E-CAiO — CO2 waveform, EtCO2, FiCO2, respiration rate, FiO2, EtO2, FiN2O, EtN2O, agent identification, FiAA, EtAA, MAC, MACage — is sent over the module bus to the host monitor, which is responsible for trend storage, alarm management, and EMR export. On CARESCAPE platforms running anesthesia software, trends are typically stored breath-by-breath for the most recent window and at decimated intervals over multi-hour periods, supporting standard anesthesia record-keeping workflows. Integration with the GE Centricity Anesthesia AIMS or third-party AIMS via HL7 is handled at the host monitor level, not the module level — the same E-CAiO module producing data on a CARESCAPE B850 in OR 1 will produce records identically on a CARESCAPE B650 in OR 4 if both hosts are configured to the same AIMS. Pressure-volume and flow-volume loops are not supported on the E-CAiO (those are spirometry features handled by the V variants).
Network and EMR Integration
The E-CAiO itself is not a networked device — it communicates only with its host monitor over the module bus. EMR connectivity, AIMS export, and CARESCAPE Central Station communication are all managed by the host monitor’s MC and IX network interfaces. On CARESCAPE Monitor B650 and B850 hosts, gas data flows through the host’s MC Network to the CARESCAPE Central Station and through the IX Network to the hospital EMR, AIMS server, or HL7 gateway. This means an E-CAiO module deployed in a facility’s existing CARESCAPE infrastructure inherits whatever EMR and AIMS integration the host monitor is already configured for — no separate networking work is required at the module level. Facilities upgrading anesthesia documentation from paper to electronic records typically focus configuration effort on the host CARESCAPE monitor and its IX Network connection rather than on the gas module itself.
FDA Device Corrections and Safety Bulletins
In April 2014, GE Healthcare issued a field safety correction covering the Compact Airway Module family — including the E-CAiO, E-CAiOV, E-CAiOVX, E-CO, E-COV, and E-COVX — for a defined serial number range (6704120 through 6778756). The issue was identified as gas sampling pump hex screw loosening, which could cause pump failure and a corresponding loss of respiratory airway gas parameter monitoring. The correction was documented by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (event RC-2014-RN-00488-1, classified Class I) and was issued via OEM field safety notice in multiple jurisdictions; GE Healthcare implemented a service correction for affected modules, and the action was formally closed out on February 2, 2016. When this fault occurs in service today, the host monitor displays a “Low gas sample flow” or “Check sample gas out” alarm; per GE’s field instructions, users should verify the water trap, the sample line, the gas sampling adapter at the airway, and the gas exhaust outlet before concluding the pump itself is at fault. A separate, more recent FDA Class I recall in September 2019 covered a different oxygen sensor manufacturing issue, but that 2019 action specifically affected the newer E-sCO/E-sCOV/E-sCOVX/E-sCAiO/E-sCAiOV/E-sCAiOVX modules and the N-CAiO Airway Gas Option — not the original E-CAiO covered by this listing.
Because FDA device corrections and safety communications may be updated or expanded after the date of this listing, IPR Medical recommends that facilities also check the FDA’s official resources directly to ensure they have the most current information.
